Chapter Ninedid enough and were lacking in this regard. 100 volunteers were appointedfor taking care of the guests, 50 of whom were entrustedwith ifţār and 50 with seĥr. The lower story of the masjid was forthe local people in i‘tikāf while the second and third story was forforeigners and special guests. In the lower story, ifţār consisted ofrice, meat, sweets, fruits, drinks, biscuits, and tea after tarāwīĥ. Fiveor six different types of curries were made for guests from abroadto accommodate their tastes. Shaikh Yūsuf Tutlā supervised onegroup that comprised of Shaikh ‘Abd al- Ĥāfiż, Sufi MuĥammadIqbāl, Shaikh Yūsuf Mutāla and Muftī Sulaimān Pāndor. Thisgroup attended to various duties.The group in charge of foreign affairs was: Yunus Nurgut,Ghulām Ĥusain Mullā, Ayyūb Isĥāq and Qāsim Mehtar whileIsmā‘īl Ĥāfiżjī, Aĥmad Mānjra, and Brother ‘Abid were incharge of kitchen duties. The responsibility for announcements,translation [for foreign guests] and managing the gathering fell onShaikh Qāsim Bhaurat, who executed his duties professionally andbeautifully. The crowd was also quick to obey his command [theyobeyed with the first announcement].Departure from Madina and the journey to ReunionThe plan to spend Ramadan in South Africa was finalized andthe necessary preparations were complete when Shaikh Sa‘īdAngār arrived from Reunion with four friends to meet Ĥađrat inMadina. He requested Ĥađrat that he come to Reunion, saying,“Please come to our place for a short time, either on your way to orwhen returning from South Africa.” Shaikh Sa‘īd Angār had longstandingrelations with Ĥađrat, had translated many of Ĥađrat’sbooks and is presently the director of the Islamic center in Reunion.Ĥađrat told his helpers to ask him, “How many khanqās will theyestablish and how many dhākirīn are they going to prepare?” Thiswas the only condition Ĥađrat put for visiting Reunion. Shaikh‘Abd al-Ĥāfiż said, “Since there is no concessionary fare for thistrip unless one purchases a year round ticket, the expense willbecome outrageously high and the ticket fare will increase by fifty95
