Each BatMitzvah wrote a profile of her own path ofJewish learning, which is reprinted below.Maria Fleischmann’spersonal journey toa more meaningfulJudaism began whenshe heard ZippySchorr speak toa meeting of theAssociated’s YoungWomen’s LeadershipCouncil. Motivated, she and husbandBarry enrolled their children Daniel,Rachel, and Jared in Beth Tfiloh’s preschool.Maria began to find that, the moretime she spent at Beth Tfiloh with Mrs.Schorr and Rabbi Wohlberg, the more shegrew spiritually. The first formal steps inher transformation were her conversionunder Rabbi Wohlberg’s direction and hertaking classes at Beth Tfiloh. After theirthird child’s Bar Mitzvah, she felt it wasfinally her turn to become Bat Mitzvahherself.Jill Goldbergtakes pride in herthree daughters andespecially how theirnames perpetuate thecherished memoriesof special familymembers of earlieryears. Personalpride in her heritage, engagement withcontemporary issues affecting Jews, andseeking meaningful expressions of Jewishholiday observance are ways in whichJill’s strong Jewish identity is shared withher husband Howard and daughters Ilana,Hannah, and Samantha. Jill has beenenvisioning her Bat Mitzvah for morethan 27 years and now she enjoys thespecial pleasure of demonstrating to herdaughters just how important her Jewishidentity is to her.Ja-Ni Hirschmann’sreligious identityhas always beenimportant to her. BETH TFILOH BULLETIN march 2007 adar/nisan 5767Mazel Tov B'not MitzvahContinued from page 3likes to point out that, while her Jewishidentity is newly chosen, she delights inembracing the heritage, traditions, andlearning that have brought her to Judaism.Ja-Ni sees her husband Rob, son Eli, anddaughters Aviya and Navah as growingJewishly together, with each familymember contributing something newlylearned, whether it be through family timeand Shabbat dinners together, attendingservices, or through the children’sattendance at Beth Tfiloh School.Janet Jacobs hasstudied Judaism asan adult for almost15 years, with theunwavering goalof articulating theimportance oftradition and Jewishknowledge to herhusband Carl and children Robyn andJarrod. “Being a Bat Mitzvah,” Janet says,“makes me feel closer to G-d and closer tothe Jewish community. It is a culminationand a beginning ….” Janet marvels at thefeeling of comfort and togetherness sheshares with other Jews while traveling toother countries; and she sees the conceptof Tikkun Olam, or “Repairing theWorld,” as the next logical focus of herJudaism.Caryl Kaufmanrecalls Passoverseders presidedover jointly by hergreat grandfatherand grandfather, dressed in theirlong white kittelsand taking turns leading and singing theritual prayers. But it was her grandmotherand role model, Sara Bernhardt, whosememory was Caryl’s greatest motivationto become a Bat Mitzvah. Now, Caryl isbusy passing along her love for Judaism’straditions to her granddaughter Sara, along with her other family members:sons Jason and Justin, granddaughterMari, and her life partner Melvin.Kathie Okun hasalways been interestedin Judaism andits texts but it wasthrough her marriageto Harvey that sheexperienced Judaismfirst-hand. Searchingfor a stronger religious family experiencefor themselves and daughter Jaclyn, theydecided to join Beth Tfiloh whereKathie completed her transformation asa Jew in a place where she felt at home. Her plans now include continuing to growspiritually, in ways that can support herJewish family, at home and in the communitythrough learning, volunteering andtzedakah.Sandi Rubincherishes theShabbat, itspreparations andceremonies andhow it provides anoasis where she, herhusband Marc, sonJoshua and daughter Ilyssa can spendquality time together. Sandi choseJudaism in 1995 after meeting Marc andbeing exposed to rich family traditionsand occasions that she found bothappealing and fulfilling. Her studies ofHebrew language and Jewish history havebeen rewarding, but she found the deepestimpression has been learning about theJewish soul. Sandi’s next goal is to becomemore involved in adult education and tocontinue her volunteer activities.Barbara Shapirofeels blessed to be aJew today, especiallywhen reflecting on“how difficult it hasbeen throughouttime for so manyto practice thisreligion.” A Jew bychoice, Barbara notes that the road bywhich she is becoming Bat Mitzvah is sodifferent from the one that her daughtersIsabella and Morgan will follow. Butnow, together with husband Melvin, shefeels confident in being able to teach herchildren the spirituality that comes withElaine Susel grewup Jewish in Floridaand worked as a SalesExecutive for Coca-Cola. A job transferbrought Elaine toBaltimore where shemet husband Gary. When daughtersDahlia and Abbey came along, Elainerealized the importance of establishingfamily traditions and rituals and she seesthe girls as catalysts for starting a moreintensive Jewish education for herself. She has found the spirit, commitment, and passion of Beth Tfiloh inspiring andshe hopes to build on the knowledge andvalues she has gained.Geri Willen’sgreatest pleasure, along with herhusband Mark, hasbeen to provideher family (Adam,Marci, Cassidy,Eden, Daisy, Melissa,Lance, Alexandra,Raquel, Jen, Simon, Rebecca, and Deven)with a rich Jewish culture filled withmany traditions. She delights in ritualobjects brought back from Israel or madeby her grandchildren that are used atholiday dinners, and she is proud of themezzuzot given to her children for usein their homes. But it was when Geri’sgrandchildren began to learn aboutJudaism, Israel, and to read Hebrewthrough attendance at Beth Tfiloh Schoolthat her “latent interest” in improving herJewish knowledge was sparked.Information HotlineCall 410-559-2472or check our websitewww.BethTfiloh.com/MyBTfor cancellations, schedulechanges and weather-relatedannouncements.

Because this sale involvesmany technicalities, it has been traditional for the Rabbi of the congregationto act as the agent for those who sell their Chametz.Everyone who prepares his or her home for Pesach should arrange withthe Rabbi to sell their Chametz. This is effectuated by signing a Statement ofAuthorization (Shtar Harshaah), which may be done anytime prior to midmorningon Monday, April 2.The authorization form below meets the Halachic requirements and shouldbe delivered to the Congregation Office in order that Rabbi Wohlberg mayreceive it prior to Monday, April 2. If you own Chametz in several places, suchas your home and a vacation home, include all of the addresses. It is customary to make a contribution in connection with the selling ofChametz. Please make your check payable to the “Beth Tfiloh Charity Fund”to assist the many needy individuals in the Baltimore area who will not be ableto properly observe the Passover holiday without some financial assistance.Your generosity will be most appreciated.REMINDER - Please wait a brief period after the end of Passover beforeusing your Chametz in order for Rabbi Wohlberg to have sufficient time torepurchase it on your behalf. This form is available at www.BethTfiloh.com>Synagogue Community>Holidays>PesachSALE OF CHAMETZ AUTHORIZATION FORM(Please return to the Synagogue Office)I _________________________________________________________residing at the following locations:_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________do hereby fully authorize Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg to act as my agent for the saleof all Chametz in my possession, whether according to Biblical or Rabbinic law oraccepted Jewish custom.____________________________________________Signature____________________Dated
