2General InformationBrief History of Medical Educationat <strong>Semmelweis</strong> <strong>University</strong>Card<strong>in</strong>al Péter Pázmány founded the predecessorof the present day <strong>University</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1635 at Nagyszombat(today Trnava <strong>in</strong> Slovakia), his bishopseat. On November 7, 1769 Queen Maria Theresaof Austria–<strong>Hungary</strong> attached a Faculty of Medic<strong>in</strong>eto the former Faculties (Theology and Jura).The new Faculty was moved to Buda <strong>in</strong> 1777. The“Diploma Inaugurale” which stated the rights ofthe <strong>University</strong> and allocated the necessary f<strong>in</strong>ancialmeans was signed <strong>in</strong> 1780. After a few years,the <strong>University</strong> moved to the other side of the Danube,to Pest. (Buda and Pest were <strong>in</strong>dependentcities at that time). In 1848, at the time of the NationalWar of Independence , the former <strong>University</strong>of Nagyszombat became a National <strong>University</strong>.The establishment of the present cl<strong>in</strong>ical departmentsand theoretical <strong>in</strong>stitutes started at theend of the 19th century at their present location <strong>in</strong>Budapest. These build<strong>in</strong>gs are still <strong>in</strong> use afterreconstruction and modernization. New cl<strong>in</strong>ics and<strong>in</strong>stitutes were built dur<strong>in</strong>g the 20th century.In 1951, the Faculty of Medic<strong>in</strong>e was reorganized<strong>in</strong>to an <strong>in</strong>dependent medical school, and the<strong>in</strong>stitutional name was changed to Budapest <strong>University</strong>of Medic<strong>in</strong>e. In 1955, Faculties of Dentistryand Pharmacy were <strong>in</strong>corporated <strong>in</strong>to the <strong>University</strong>.In 1969, the name of the <strong>University</strong> waschanged to <strong>Semmelweis</strong> <strong>University</strong> of Medic<strong>in</strong>e.The new name honors Ignác <strong>Semmelweis</strong> (seecover photo) who discovered the cause of puerperalfever and was a professor and chairman on theFaculty of Medic<strong>in</strong>e at the present 1st Departmentof Obstetrics and Gynecology.Today, <strong>Semmelweis</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>in</strong>corporatesthe Faculties of Medic<strong>in</strong>e, Dentistry, Pharmacy,Physical Education and Sports Sciences and theCollege of Health Care. <strong>Semmelweis</strong> <strong>University</strong>was the first Hungarian higher educational <strong>in</strong>stitution,which, <strong>in</strong> addition to educate at the abovefaculties <strong>in</strong> Hungarian, started to offer an <strong>in</strong>ternationalprogram at the Faculty of Medic<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>German <strong>in</strong> 1983, while its <strong>in</strong>ternational program<strong>in</strong> English started <strong>in</strong> 1987, at the Faculties ofMedic<strong>in</strong>e, Dentistry and Pharmacy.Facts and Figures<strong>Semmelweis</strong> <strong>University</strong> has a more than 230-yearold tradition of academic excellence and commitmentto the education of physicians. Among <strong>Semmelweis</strong>alumni are Nobel-laureates, world renownedresearchers and cl<strong>in</strong>icians. Current enrolmentat the Faculty of Medic<strong>in</strong>e is 3200 students,at the Faculty of Dentistry 630, and at theFaculty of Pharmacy 649. Four percent of all medicalstudents are foreign citizens study<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>Hungarian. A special German-language Doctor ofMedic<strong>in</strong>e/Dentistry program has 481 Germanstudents enrolled, while the programs <strong>in</strong> Englishhave altogether 1109 students registered atthree faculties. The <strong>University</strong> Hospitals have2800 beds and admit about 112,000 patientsannually. The outpatient departments care forapproximately 2.1 million patients each year. Researchprograms at the Precl<strong>in</strong>ical and Cl<strong>in</strong>icalDepartments are sponsored by the <strong>University</strong>,the M<strong>in</strong>istry of Education, the Hungarian Academyof Sciences, by many national and <strong>in</strong>ternationalgrants.


3AccreditationAs a state university <strong>Semmelweis</strong> <strong>University</strong>functions under the auspices of the M<strong>in</strong>istry ofEducation and the M<strong>in</strong>istry of Health. The <strong>University</strong>is listed <strong>in</strong> the WHO’s directory of MedicalSchools. The faculties of the <strong>University</strong> were reaccreditedby the Hungarian Accreditation Board <strong>in</strong>2006. The decision of the National Committee onForeign Medical Education and Accreditation ofthe USA declares: The standards and processesused by the Hungarian Accreditation Council toaccredit medical schools <strong>in</strong> <strong>Hungary</strong> are comparableto those used to accredit medical schools <strong>in</strong>the United States.<strong>International</strong> Recognitionof the <strong>Degree</strong>sEuropean Union: In those professions where theconditions of education <strong>in</strong> <strong>Hungary</strong> are identicalwith those <strong>in</strong> the European Union, and these havealready been recognized (medical and dental doctors,pharmacists etc.), the member states of theEuropean Union are obliged to accept the diplomasissued <strong>in</strong> <strong>Hungary</strong>, <strong>in</strong>dependent of the languageof tuition.USA: <strong>Semmelweis</strong> graduates (as foreign graduates)have the right to pass the United StatesMedical Licens<strong>in</strong>g Exam<strong>in</strong>ations (USMLE), afterwhich they are eligible for residency.Canada: <strong>Semmelweis</strong> graduates are eligible topass the Medical Council of Canada EvaluationExam<strong>in</strong>ation (MCCEE) and the Medical Council ofCanada Qualify<strong>in</strong>g Exam<strong>in</strong>ation (MCCQE) beforeapply<strong>in</strong>g for residencies.Israel: <strong>Semmelweis</strong> graduates have to completea one-year practice and pass a test beforethey are eligible for obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the permit to practicemedic<strong>in</strong>e.India: Doctor of Dentistry degree of <strong>Semmelweis</strong><strong>University</strong> is equivalent to B.D.S. degree <strong>in</strong> India.The <strong>Programs</strong> <strong>in</strong> EnglishMedic<strong>in</strong>e, Dentistry and PharmacyThe <strong>Programs</strong> <strong>in</strong> English at <strong>Semmelweis</strong> <strong>University</strong>were <strong>in</strong>stituted for students with a good knowledgeof English. The programs beg<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> early Septembereach year. The curriculum <strong>in</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>e consists ofsix years of studies, <strong>in</strong> Dentistry and Pharmacy fiveyears. At the conclusion of the programs the degreesgranted <strong>in</strong> English and German are identicalto those granted at the Hungarian program: Doctorof Medic<strong>in</strong>e (dr. med.), Doctor of Dentistry (dr. med.dent.) and Master of Science (M.Sc.).Statement of Non-Discrim<strong>in</strong>ation<strong>Semmelweis</strong> <strong>University</strong> does not discrim<strong>in</strong>ate onthe basis of race, color, national or ethnic orig<strong>in</strong>,religion, sex, marital status.


4Application and Admission RequirementsApplication CriteriaThe programs are offered to foreign citizens. Applicantsare required to be over the age of 18 andpreferably under the age of 30, when register<strong>in</strong>gto the university. The Faculties of Medic<strong>in</strong>e, Dentistryand Pharmacy at <strong>Semmelweis</strong> <strong>University</strong>seek students who completed high school/seniorsecondary school and who possess good commandof English, and a strong motivation to study andpractice medic<strong>in</strong>e, dentistry or pharmacy.Application ProcedureApplications should be sent preferably until April30 to the officially appo<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>Semmelweis</strong> representative<strong>in</strong> your country (see the list of representativesat www.studyhungary.hu), or if there is norepresentative, directly to <strong>Semmelweis</strong> <strong>University</strong>.The follow<strong>in</strong>g documents should be attached(<strong>in</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al or as attested copies, <strong>in</strong> English orwith an authorized English translation).1. Application Form (signed)2. Matriculation / School Leav<strong>in</strong>g Certificatefrom an accredited high school / senior secondaryschool. Registration number of documentsshould be <strong>in</strong>dicated.3. Transcripts of high school / senior secondaryschool courses verify<strong>in</strong>g successful completionof General Biology or Zoology, General or InorganicChemistry, Organic Chemistry and Physics.Unofficial transcripts may be submitted,but acceptance <strong>in</strong>to the program will be oncondition of receipt of all official transcripts orattested copies.4. Letters of Recommendation. Letters <strong>in</strong> Englishfrom a secondary school pr<strong>in</strong>cipal or scienceteachers are preferred. Particularly valuable areletters of recommendation from persons whostudied at or graduated from our school.5. Curriculum Vitae (Resume) <strong>in</strong> English.6. Medical Certificate. Certification that the applicantis physically and mentally able to completehigher educational studies, does notsuffer from chronic <strong>in</strong>fectious disease, dyslexiaand a negative HIV test should be attached,as well as proof of Hepatitis B vacc<strong>in</strong>ation.7. Signed Photographs. 6 passport size photos(Sign on the back!)8. Copy of passport or ID card, if you are from anEU country, with your personal data.9. Application fee of USD 150 (non refundable) ispayable to the local representative. If there isno local representative please transfer the feeto bank account of <strong>International</strong> Studies, andplease attach a certified cheque or proof of thebank about the transfer of the fee.10. 5Entrance Exam<strong>in</strong>ationsDate of Exam<strong>in</strong>ationsEntrance exam<strong>in</strong>ations are held <strong>in</strong> Budapest andworldwide. (please see www.studyhungary.hu).The qualified applicants will be <strong>in</strong>vited to theentrance exam<strong>in</strong>ation by the university or theofficial university representative.Contents of the Entrance ExamsThe exams consist of multiple choice tests <strong>in</strong>Biology, Chemistry and English, followed by anoral exam<strong>in</strong>ation, which will focus on the applicant’sknowledge of Biology, Chemistry and English,and will be supplemented by a personal<strong>in</strong>terview.Guidel<strong>in</strong>e of Topics for the Entrance Examat the Faculty of General Medic<strong>in</strong>e, Dentistry andPharmacy – 2008/2009 Academic Year:1. Reproduction and development of animals.9. Genetics: Mendelian <strong>in</strong>heritance, human genetics.10. Basic ethology.11. Basic ecology (cycles of C, N, P, H 2 O <strong>in</strong>cluded).Note: In all of these questions, knowledge of Englishterm<strong>in</strong>ology is required!EvaluationThe evaluation of the Entrance Exam<strong>in</strong>ations willbe performed by the <strong>University</strong> Board.Student visaThe accepted students should apply for a D-5student visa.
