U N I V E R S I T Y O F P E N N S Y L V A N I AThe Penn RelaysPenn Relay Carnival115 years of traditionThe Penn Relays Carnival—run the final weekend in April every year—is the world’soldest and largest relay meet. It is also the world’s longest uninterrupted collegiaterelay event. The University of Pennsylvania is the honored host of the world famousPenn Relays, which held its 115th running in 2009.The goal of the Penn Relay Carnival is a simple one: to provide the bestcompetition for the greatest number of participants of all levels, ages andabilities. In its 115-year history, the Carnival has provided competition for more athletes than any other track meet in the world. Duringthe past 10 years more than 100,000 young men and women from high schools, colleges, clubs, thearmed services, prep schools, junior high schools, middle schools, parochial schools and elementaryschools have competed in the Carnival. The athletes range in age from under eight to over 80.In 2009, during some 34 hours of competition on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, more than 465races were run, an average of more than one raceevery five minutes. In all, 936 high schools from 18states, Washington D.C., and seven other countriesparticipated. There were also 245 colleges from 37states, Washington D.C., and four other countries inaendance. Saturday’s annual “USA vs. the World” eventhas aracted many of the world’s top athletes over the last eightyears, including Olympic gold medalists Michael Johnson, GailDevers, Maurice Greene, Sanya Richards, Jon Drummond, JeremyWariner and Shawn Crawford.Every year, national powerhouses such as Arkansas, Michigan, Texas,Florida, Tennessee and South Carolina make sure the Penn Relays are a part oftheir schedules.Philadelphia native Bill Cosby is a lifelong supporter of thePenn Relays and visits the event annually.Memorable Moments from 2009The 2009 Penn Relays brought 111,720 people to Philadelphia and Franklin Field—the ninth time in the last 10 years that thethree-day aendance topped 100,000. The 115th running had many memorableperformances from elite athletes the world over...• Sarah Bowman, a senior at Tennessee, was named the outstanding women’srelay athlete at the Penn Relays for her role in three of the Lady Vols’ victories(4x1500, 4x800, distance medley). Her anchor time of 4:10.2 in the 4x1500clinched the team’s world-record clocking of 17:08.34.• Albemarle (Va.) High School set a national record in the Boys’ 4x800 relay. The national record in the 4×800 had been set at the Relays before, but it wasback in 1921 when Cedar Rapids of Iowa ran 8:25.4, almost a minute slowerthan Albemarle.• Penn set school records in two events. The sprint medley relay team broke aprogram mark that was set in 2005 and the 4x1500-meter relay set the schoolstandard in the Championship of America race.• There were several athletes that performed at the Penn Relays in April aerwinning medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics eight months earlier. Medalistsincluded Asafa Powell, Allyson Felix, LaShawn Merri, Walter Dix, SanyaRichards and Wallace Spearmon to name a few.• In 2010, the 116th running of the world’s largest relays will take place from Jeremy Wariner ran at the Penn Relays in 2008, just four monthsApril 22 through April 24.prior to winning a gold medal and a silver medal at the 2008Olympic Games.2PennAthletics.com

The topperformances of the weekend for Pennwere led by Aagenes’ All-Ivy effort inthe 800 meters where she placed second.Junior Hannah Cope also earned All-Ivyhonors with a second-place showing inthe 60-meter hurdles. Others with strongperformances in Penn’s fih-place teamfinish included sophomore Kali Stotherin the 200 meters, finishing fih. JuniorKathryn Gevitz was third in the long jumpand also scored in the triple jump, placingfourth. Freshman Catherine Okoukoniwas fih in the triple jump and fellowfreshman Leah Brown placed fourth in the60 meters. Another freshman, high jumperKristen Judge, was fih in her event andthe underclassmen filled 4x400-meterrelay team was sixth. In all, 11 differentQuakers broke into the program’s indoorall-time top ten lists on 15 occassions.Only two of those 11 have graduated, meaning this young team will surelycontinue to develop and grow into one ofthe best indoor teams in the Ivy League.Judge2008-09 HonorsAll-EastINDOORAnna Aagenes800 meters . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .2:10.53Kinjal ParikhDistance Medley Relay. . . .11:50.00Kimberly ShooshanDistance Medley Relay. . . .11:50.00Laura SteelDistance Medley Relay. . . .11:50.00Rachel VillaDistance Medley Relay. . . .11:50.00OUTDOORAnna Aagenes800 meters . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .2:10.46All-IvyINDOORAnna AagenesSecond Team (800m). . . . . . .2:08.80Hannah CopeSecond Team (60m hurdles) . . 8.84OUTDOORAnna AagenesSecond Team (800m). . . . . . .2:09.18Leah BrownSecond Team (4x100) . . . . . . . 46.51Paige MadisonSecond Team (4x100) . . . . . . . 46.51Renee McDougallSecond Team (4x100) . . . . . . . 46.51Kali StrotherSecond Team (4x100) . . . . . . . 46.51NCAA QualifiersCROSS COUNTRYLeah BroganSchool RecordsOUTDOOREvent . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Therewere strong efforts from the team on aconsistent basis, but not quite enoughexperience to take them all the way. Atthe Outdoor Heptagonal Championshipsheld at Franklin Field, the team onceagain placed many of its athletes into thefinals, but the young group was unableto grab points from the more experiencedopposition, finishing seventh as a team atthe event.2008-09 Year In ReviewUnderclassmen again accounted formost of the scoring for the Quakers. LeahBrown was fourth in the 100 meters andseventh in the 200 meters. NCAA Regionalqualifier, Anna Aagenes was second inthe 800 meters. In the 100-meter hurdles, freshman Paige Madison was fourth, andplaced once again in the 400 hurdles, finishing fih. Freshman CatherineOkoukoni was sixth in the triple jump andthe 4x100-meter relay—made up of allunderclassmen—earned All-Ivy honorswith a second place finish of 46.51 — thesecond-best time in program history. At the 115th running of the Penn Relays, the Quakers set two school records. They broke the school mark in the sprintmedley relay and, in the Championshipof America race, they shaered the Pennrecord in 4x1500-meter relay. In the postseason, nearly two dozenQuakers competed at the ECACChampionships and two Quakers—Aagenes and Brogan—reached the NCAAEast Regional Championships. The Quakers pose after the 2009 Outdoor Heptagonal Championships.Left to right: Renee McDougall, Kali Strother, PaigeMadison and Leah Brown made up the 4x100 relay team.Top Returning Performances of 2008-0960 Meters1. The Penn women’s track and field program has been honored with five members of thisprestigious collection of distinguished individuals.Frances Childs - Class IIFrances Childs dominated on the track and in thefield during her four years at Penn, culminatingin 1988 when she co-captained the Red and Blue.Childs set four records, two of which still stood atthe time of her induction. Childs was the formerrecord-holder for the pentathlon and heptathlon, but her marks in the outdoor long jump (19 feet, 61/4 inches, set in 1985) and indoor shule hurdlerelay (only Penn team to run in under 30 seconds)still stand.Childs won All-Ivy honors, both indoors and outdoors, each of herfour seasons. In 1985, she won the 100-meter hurdles and long jump atHeptagonals. In 1986 and 1988, Childs won the heptathlon competition atthe championships, and in 1987 she was the league’s best long jumper. With 4,886 points, Childs won the Penn Relays heptathlon competition, becoming Penn’s first and only female to win a Relays championshipevent.Since 1992, Childs has been an official at the Olympic Festivalcompetition, the Penn Relays, Olympic Trials, World University gamesand the U.S. Track and Field Championships.Bey Costanza - Class VIBey began her Penn career in 1976 with a clubteam of six athletes; the program moved to varsitystatus in 1978, and she served as the program’sonly head coach until her retirement in 2002. Underher leadership, the cross country/track and fieldprogram flourished, and distinguished itself as aconsistently competitive program within the IvyLeague and in the East.Considered one of the most successful coachesin Ivy League track and field history, Bey’s teamswon an impressive seven Heptagonal championships, 11 Ivy Leaguetitles, and 10 Big Five championships. More than 140 athletes garneredAll-Ivy honors during her tenure at Penn, and more then 50 were guidedto individual Heptagonal championships. Among them were the 1981cross country team that ran at the National Championships, and 1982national qualifiers Riva Gensib (5,000) and Mary Turner (800).Six of Bey’s student-athletes became NCAA Qualifiers, includingfellow Hall of Fame Class VI inductee Kate O’Hern; Sue Eckel; ChristelleWilliams (a three-time ECAC champion); and Frances Childs (theQuakers’ first Penn Relays heptathlon champion). Among the morenotable athletes during Bey’s tenure were Joan PhengLaOr, whocompeted in the long jump at the 1984 Olympic Games to become theprogram’s first Olympian; Chris Lundy, who became the Quakers’ firstthree-time distance All-American in 1992; Karyn Smith, an indoor triplejump All-American in 1994 who represented the East at the OlympicSports Festival; and Julie Siebert-Johnson, a 2000 Junior National All-American in the javelin.A 1969 graduate of West Chester State, Bey was nationally ranked inthe pentathlon and competed in the Millrose Games, the AAU NationalPentathlon Championships, and the 1964 Olympic Trials. A renownedtechnician in the sport, she has authored a book on track and field forwomen. Bey also served as director of the Penn Relays heptathlon, andchaired both the Heptagonal Games Association and the NCAA DivisionI Track & Field Coaches Association.24PennAthletics.comChristine Lundy - Class VChristine Lundy, C’92 V’96, enjoyed a superb careerboth on the cross country course and on the trackfor Penn. She was a two-time All-American in crosscountry, in 1989 and 1991, and also earned firstteamHeptagonal honors in cross country (1990 and1991) with a top-five finish at the championshipmeet. In track, Lundy earned All-America in 1992in the outdoor 3,000 meters. Her three All-Americacertificates are more than any other female crosscountry/track & field athletes have won at Penn.Lundy’s name is splaered throughout the Penn track record book.In indoor, she still holds the mark in the 5,000 (16:47.43), is second in the3,000 (9:26.82), third in the mile (4:54.23) and sixth in the 1,000 (2:57.70).Outdoors, she is second in the 5,000 (16:32.63) and 3,000 (9:28.47) andninth in the 1,500 (4:34.04).Lundy has continued to run since her graduation—she was a memberof the U.S. Mountain Running Team in 2005, and competed in the 2004Olympic Marathon Trials. She competed as a member of the Nike FarmTeam from 2001-04.Catherine “Kate” O’Hern Lyons - Class VIIn 1985, Kate O’Hern set the Penn women’s trackrecord in the outdoor 1,500 meters; it held until2006, when it was finally broken. In 1984, O’Hernset the program mark in the indoor and outdoor800; both of those held until last year (in the case ofthe outdoor, barely ... as in 3/100ths of a second). In 1985, O’Hern established the Penn record inthe indoor mile; it still stands, 23 years later, and infact no one has come within three seconds of hertime. Add in the records she set in the indoor 1,000—since topped fourtimes—and the outdoor mile, and a trio of records with various relayteams, and you have yourself a Hall of Fame career. Kate emerged on thescene as a freshman in 1983, as part of Penn’s 4x800 relay team that wonHeps with a record time that was the standard in that event for sevenyears.A year later, she won the 800 at Outdoor Heps with a time thatshaered the previous conference mark by more than three seconds. Katerepeated that title in 1985, and also notched indoor 1,500 titles in 1985 and1986. A two-time captain, Kate was a member of two Outdoor Heptagonalteam champions—1985 and 1986—and the Quakers swept their Ivycompetition four other times at Heps (finishing second to Army eachtime). On the national level, Kate competed at the NCAA Championshipstwice in the 800, and in 1992 she qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials inNew Orleans in the 1,500.Christelle Williams - Class IVWhen Christelle Williams graduated in 1989, shele with seven individual and three relay track andfield program records. She also went undefeatedduring her Ivy League career as the sprint hurdleschampion. Along the way she earned threeOutdoor Heptagonal titles and was crowned anECAC Champion in the 55m and 100m hurdles. One of the fastest women in Penn history, Williamswas named team MVP two-consecutive years. As a freshman in 1986, Williams burst ontothe Ivy League track scene by earning the Most Outstanding Performeraward at both Indoor and Outdoor Heps. At Indoor Heps, she wonthe 55-meter hurdles (8.12) and the 200 (25.04); at Outdoor Heps, shecontinued her dominance, this time picking up the 100 (12.32), 200 (25.06)and 100-meter hurdles (14.34) titles.Williams’ junior year saw her make personal improvements, as shebested her 55-meter hurdles time by four-hundredths of a second tocontinue her reign as Indoor Heps champion.During the 1988 indoor season, Williams was crowned champion inthree events at the Heptagonal Championships—the 55-meter hurdles(8.02), 200 (25.18) and triple jump (39-4). Theplan acknowledges the unprecedentedopportunity to transform the Penn campusin response to the acquisition of propertyalong the Schuylkill River. This campusexpansion of contiguous land will enablethe University, for the first time in history,to establish a major physical presencealong the Schuylkill River corridor, createnew gateways to the campus from the city, and establish new connections with thesurrounding communities. In terms of Penn Athletics, the planningstudy aims to create a signature new urbanpark to include sports and recreationfields east of Franklin Field on the site ofthe existing Bower Field and the surfaceparking areas of the postal lands. This“once in a generation” opportunity willalso enable Penn Athletics to address manyof its programmatic needs, as well as keypriorities that may arise over the nextseveral years.Though still in the planning stages andsubject to change, Penn Athletics intends tocreate the Franklin Field Pavilion to houseexisting named spaces as well as some newconstruction and renovation of existingspaces. In addition, there are plansto build two synthetic turf fields and twosmaller grass fields (all for intercollegiateand recreational use), a new soball-specificstadium, outdoor tennis complex and aseasonal air structure that will serve as anindoor practice facility that can be raisedand lowered during the winter months.Another major change on the landscapeof the athletics area of campus is the creationof the Palestra Green; a green quadrangle infront of the Palestra and adjacent to FranklinField that would be part of the urban parkextending along the banks of the river.
