Teams were organized to monitor the change strategies that emerged, and the names given those teams is an indication of how much MEMC values its global workforce: “Global Integration Teams, “Local Area Change Agent Teams,” and “Global Break-through Teams” were set up to communicate and monitor the change strategies. Throughout MEMC’s past newsletters you can find numerous examples of how employees at all locations take pride in their ability to contribute to MEMC’s success. The varied ways in which this pride is expressed often reflects the culture and customs of the country in which the plant is located, embodying the notion that excellence and achievement are without geographic boundaries. The Spartanburg plant started “The Perfect Wafer” program in 1996 to increase customer satisfaction and reduce customer advisories by 40 percent every year. In April of 1997, an audience of more than 450 people gathered as nine teams competed in their performance of a song that had been commissioned by PHC at MEMC’s joint venture plant at Cheonan, Korea. The goal was to improve harmony and promote a sense of pride and belonging at the plant. Also at PHC, teams of employees participated in tree planting events as a way of reinforcing the idea that the growth of the company requires a team effort. In January 1996, twenty-one engineers from six MEMC plants met at a “Best Practices” conference at the Utsunomiya site. The idea came from S. C. Chang while on assignment from Korea. Chang was looking for ways to compare the performance of process on the 200mm wafers between St. Peters

As a result of his visit to St. Peters, five Cheonan plant employees spent a month studying the slicing operations at St. Peters, resulting in a dramatic improvement in yield. The success of that study led to a “best practices” conference in which all 200mmproducing plants participated. These conferences provide an opportunity for a synergistic exchange of ideas, the net result of which is that the best processes from each location are implemented throughout the company.
