Fourth Sunday of EasterApril 21, 2013 — Page ElevenSAINT SPOTLIGHTSAINT MARK, THE EVANGELI<strong>ST</strong>"Go into all the world and preach the gospelto the whole creation."— MARK 16:15Feast Day:April 25Died:68 ADMARK LIVED AT THE TIME OF JESUS.Although he was not one of the twelve apostlesof Jesus, he was a cousin of St. Barnabas, anapostle. Mark is called an evangelist because he wroteone of the four Gospels. Mark's Gospel is short, but itgives many little details that are not in the otherGospels. While still young, Mark went with the two greatsaints, Paul and Barnabas, as missionaries to bringthe teachings of Jesus to Cyprus and other newlands. Before the journey was over, though, Markhad an argument with St. Paul and immediatelyreturned to Jerusalem. Paul and Mark later madepeace with each other. In fact, Paul wrote fromprison in Rome that Mark came to cheer and helphim.MARKALSO BECAME A BELOVED DISCIPLEand was like a son to St. Peter, the first pope.St. Mark was made a bishop and sent toAlexandria, Egypt. There many people who heard himpreach became Christians. He worked hard to spreadlove for Jesus and his Church and founded the firstfamous Christian school in Alexandria. He went through long and painful sufferingsbefore he died a martyr for his faith. St. Mark's relicswere brought to Venice, Italy. He is the patron saintof that famous city. People go to the beautiful basilicaof St. Mark to honor him and to pray to him.
