Vol. 159 • No. 17 • April 1, 2013Come, Holy Spirit Pentecost 2013Thoughtsfrom Dr. Tom PaceLiving FlowersDuring the fifty daysfollowing that firstEaster morning, the discipleshuddled in the upperroom, following the Lord’scommand to pray “to beclothed with power from onhigh.” They were “constantlydevoting themselves toprayer,” and on the day ofPentecost, they were filledwith the Holy Spirit, andGod used them in amazingand powerful ways. At St.Luke’s church, during theseason between Easter andPentecost, we are going topray continually for the HolySpirit to come in new andpowerful ways to work in andthrough our congregation.Continued on Page 2Just before Christmas, while preaching asermon titled WhatReally Matters, I sharedwith the congregationan illustration that hasbecome both iconic andtransformative for me. Itis the story of purchasingflowers for my wife, and, because I am suchDr. Tom PaceWhat we needWhat weis the Holy Spiritneed isthe HolySpirit.a thrifty guy, I bought cut flowers at the store, and took them home and tried to arrange themmyself. They looked awful. So I took them backto the florist and he arranged them to lookbeautiful, a marvelous work of art. And I tookthem home, and my wife appreciated them. But a few days later, they wilted and diedanyway. For those flowers to thrive and staybeautiful, they needed roots. They needed tobe planted, and filled with the source of life. Ithought of this illustration again this weekend,as we prepared the beds, and my wife plantedbeautiful spring flowers that are alive! This truth applies to our personal lives, ourfamilies and our church.
