Because all countries are net edible oil importers (<strong>in</strong> most casespalm oil), cottonseed oil is an import compet<strong>in</strong>g crop. Table 2.3 estimates theproportion <strong>of</strong> edible oil consumption that can be supplied from cotton seeds<strong>in</strong> each <strong>of</strong> the n<strong>in</strong>e study countries. This consumption ranges from 50 percentor more <strong>in</strong> Ben<strong>in</strong>, Burk<strong>in</strong>a Faso, <strong>and</strong> Mali to less than 10 percent <strong>in</strong> Mozambique,Tanzania, <strong>and</strong> Ug<strong>and</strong>a.<strong>Cotton</strong>seed cake is an oil process<strong>in</strong>g by-product sold as livestock feed. It israrely traded <strong>in</strong>ternationally because <strong>of</strong> its low value-to-weight ratio. Dem<strong>and</strong>for cake, therefore, depends heavily on the size <strong>and</strong> degree <strong>of</strong> commercialization<strong>of</strong> the local livestock (cattle, poultry) <strong>in</strong>dustry.MARKET CONTEXT 27
