Any analysis <strong>of</strong> the evolution <strong>and</strong> performance <strong>of</strong> cotton sectors<strong>in</strong> Sub-Saharan <strong>Africa</strong> (SSA) must, therefore, be put <strong>in</strong> this context <strong>and</strong>must take <strong>in</strong>to account the market dynamics <strong>and</strong> their implications for theentire supply cha<strong>in</strong>, back to farm level.This chapter aims to set the stage by provid<strong>in</strong>g a strategic overview <strong>of</strong> thema<strong>in</strong> characteristics <strong>of</strong> this market. First, the key trends <strong>in</strong> global supply <strong>and</strong>dem<strong>and</strong> are presented <strong>and</strong> discussed.
