First, each provided a detailed overview <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>stitutionalarrangements <strong>in</strong> place for key sector services, such as <strong>in</strong>put credit,research, <strong>and</strong> extension; l<strong>in</strong>t market<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> quality ma<strong>in</strong>tenance; <strong>and</strong> seed cottonpric<strong>in</strong>g. Especially <strong>in</strong> ESA, the diversity <strong>of</strong> approaches to these challengesprovides great scope for learn<strong>in</strong>g. Second, each study developed disaggregatedbudgets for representative g<strong>in</strong>ners, allow<strong>in</strong>g this analysis to conduct a detailedcomparison <strong>of</strong> the level <strong>and</strong> structure <strong>of</strong> g<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g costs <strong>in</strong> each country. Third,each study—except Ben<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> Cameroon—used a comparable focus groupapproach to develop detailed farm-level budgets for a range <strong>of</strong> cotton farmertypes. Focus<strong>in</strong>g on the diversity <strong>of</strong> farm types, behavior, <strong>and</strong> performance atthe farm level provides important <strong>in</strong>sights <strong>in</strong>to cotton’s contribution toINTRODUCTION 7
