4. Summary for Burkina FasoIn many ways, Burkina Faso appears not to be experiencing a fertility transition, regardless ofthe HIV epidemic. While there are trends in the various measures suggesting a movement tolower fertility, most of the changes are small. The exception is in the use of moderncontraceptive methods, which rises steeply. This increased contraceptive use may reflectstronger desires to space births rather them limit them. As described above, an increase in HIVprevalence may elicit changes in fertility desires and behaviors only if it is discernible as a threat.In the context of high mortality, an HIV rate of 2% may not be causing out-of-the-ordinarymorbidity or mortality levels in Burkina Faso.35
