William Henry <strong>Keller</strong> was born <strong>and</strong>raised on the south side of Indianapolis where he graduated from Manual Arts High School. In 1917 he joinedthe Army <strong>and</strong> served in France as a Corporal with the 151st Field Artillery of the Rainbow Division. After thewar he became a salesman with the Republic Creosote Company, but lost this position during the Depression.He subsequently proposed <strong>and</strong> was assigned a position to establish the first vehicle maintenance garage for theIndiana State Police. He was Superintendent of Maintenance for the State Police at their facility near FountainSquare on the south side of Indianapolis until 1940.In the 1920's he had joined the Indiana National Guard <strong>and</strong> received a commission (O-276579) <strong>and</strong>, in1940, was called to active duty as a Captain in the Quartermaster Corps of the Indiana 39th Division. Afterthe outbreak of the Second World War he remained in the Quartermaster Corps, but was assigned with theArmy Air Corps. He was assigned to Brookley Field, Mobile, Alabama until mid-1942 when he wasreassigned as Post Quartermaster at Patterson Field, Ohio. He subsequently was promoted to Major <strong>and</strong>Lieutenant Colonel <strong>and</strong> assigned to the Air Service Comm<strong>and</strong> (now the Air Force Materiel Comm<strong>and</strong>). In1944 he was transferred to the Pacific Theatre with the Far East Air Service Comm<strong>and</strong> where he served inHoll<strong>and</strong>ia, New Guinea; Biak; the Philippines; <strong>and</strong> Okinawa. He returned to the United States in late 1945after the conclusion of the war. He left the Army at that time <strong>and</strong> returned to Indianapolis. However, in 1946he returned to active duty as a Lieutenant Colonel <strong>and</strong> was briefly assigned to the Brooklyn Army Base in NewYork. In 1947 he was transferred to Fort Mason, San Fransisco where he was Chief of Graves RegistrationsDivision which was responsible for the return of American war dead from the Pacific. In 1949 he wastransferred to Marburg, Germany as Comm<strong>and</strong>er of the Quartermaster Reclamation Depot where he remaineduntil 1952. He was transferred to the Oakl<strong>and</strong> Army Depot in 1952 <strong>and</strong> purchased a house in San Mateo,California. He was assigned at Oakl<strong>and</strong> Army Base until being transferred to Korea in 1955. Although aLieutenant Colonel on active duty, he was a Colonel in the Army Reserve. Having served 20 years active duty<strong>and</strong> 10 years in the reserve, he retired as a Colonel in 1957. He remained in San Mateo, California until twoyears befor his death when he <strong>and</strong> his wife, Lucile, moved to Southern California where their son <strong>and</strong> daughterlived.Col William Henry KELLER <strong>and</strong> Dorothy Lucile JOHNSON had the following children:+ 187 i.
