Recognized by major cotton authoritiesWhen reputations depend on qualityWith USTER ® HVI technology, the facts and figures speakfor themselves. More than 2 300 HVI ® units installed inmore than 70 countries. Over half of all cotton producedworldwide is classed by USTER ® instruments. And 95 %of all classed cotton has been measured by USTER ®instruments. It’s clear that USTER sets the standard for cotton classificationworldwide, testament to the industry’s confidence in the60 - plus years of cotton fiber testing experience behindUSTER ® HVI – and the performance and accuracy of thedata it delivers. The recognition accorded to USTER ® HVI is underscoredin the Universal Cotton Standards agreement – signed by24 cotton associations from 21 countries – which approvesuniversal cotton quality standards for strength, length, uniformity index, micronaire, color grade. These standardsare fixed as the Universal HVI ® Standards and aremaintained using USTER ® HVI 1000 to establish the values.A worldwide agreement which reinforces still further thestrength of the USTER ® HVI 1000 in producing accurateand repeatable results every time.Classification of cotton with HVI ® has been increasing, especially in the past 15 years, during which USTER ® HVIhas been the favored choice of most users. Even moreimpressive is the continuous endorsement of USTER ® HVI bythe US Department of Agriculture (USDA) for the past 30years. In that period, USDA performance standards havebecome stricter, and USTER ® HVI never fails to satisfy thoserequirements. And USDA is not the only giant cotton - classing organizationwith a need for tens or even hundreds of machines to keepthe industry moving. USTER has also delivered manyinstallations for major classing bodies such as the ChinaFiber Inspection Bureau (CFIB), Uzbekistan’s SIFAT, andPakistan’s PCSI – the largest government - supportedorganizations in the cotton business. Added to those arehundreds of USTER ® HVI systems in private or government -run classing operations, producing accurate and reliabledata on the market value of cotton.Reputation is everything in a competitive market. Goodreputations often take years to build, yet can be destroyedin minutes if quality standards decline. So, customers needto be confident that the product delivered to them actuallymeets their quality needs. In the cotton trade, the first and most important factoris the fiber quality of the bales. Fiber quality is extremelyimportant to the spinner – as it will largely determinethe mill’s cost to convert the fiber into yarn. That is whyspinners need accurate quality data to base purchasedecisions on. It’s a business in which a single mistakein cotton classification can cost either the buyer or sellermillions of dollars. That’s how a reputation can bedestroyed in minutes. The USTER ® HVI 1000 has an unrivaled track record ofproducing precise, dependable test results in classificationof raw cotton. Getting the quality assessment correct ishow reputations are built and enhanced.Compliance with the strictest measurement tolerances setdown by the USDA has contributed to USTER ® HVI 1000’sreputation for unmatched accuracy. It has been confirmedin independent trials, including other fiber testing instrumenttypes, in which the USTER ® HVI 1000 has consistentlyset the standard for reproducibility of test results betweeninstruments around the world. The most important confidence builder between cottonbuyers and sellers is that cotton classification data frominstruments in any part of the world matches perfectly.Trading partners will often test cotton samples on differentinstruments to check bale quality, and it is vital for mutualtrust and confidence that the quality data each obtainsis both accurate and in agreement with that of the otherparty. USTER ® HVI 1000 is the only cotton classificationinstrument in the world able to deliver those requirements, promoting global confidence in cotton - trading decisions. The global standard acceptedworldwide– 2 300 USTER ® HVI units installedworldwide including the largestgovernment - run classingorganizations around the world– Over half the world’s cottonis classed on USTER ® HVI eachyear and growing– The universal cotton standardsagreement depends onUSTER ® HVI to establish thevalues of the Universal HVI ®Standards– Consistently meets the strictestof measurement tolerancerequirements of USDAReputations are built on quality– Customers need to be confidentin what they buy and this canonly be built on reliable andaccurate quality data– USTER ® HVI consistentlyproduces the most accurate andprecise data as confirmed inindependent trials– The reproducibility of databetween USTER ® HVI’s is whatpromotes confidence incotton -trading decisionsTop:Reference cotton standardsStrengthLengthRing 3 1 2 4Length uniformityFinenessCleanlinessBottom:Cotton - classing production lineat USDARotor 1 3 4 2 5Air - Jet 3 4 5 1 2Significance of fiber properties foryarn processing and priority ofmaterial quality characteristics

Advanced technology for critical decision makingWhen spinners are making million dollar decisionsabout raw material, they need to be sure those decisionsare accurate and consistent. The USTER ® HVI 1000 has proven itself as the mostdepen d able cotton classification platform worldwide. This repu tation is rooted in the years of experience USTERhas with cotton fiber testing and classification. It is thesource of the unique, patented technology that makes theUSTER ® HVI 1000 the most accurate cotton classificationinstrument on the market. The XENON FLASH color head is a real ‘game changer’in cotton color measurement technology. This patentedtechnology provides for more stable color measurement, with less calibration and maintenance frequency. The resultis better comparability between machines – especiallyimportant when cotton purchased on the other side of theworld needs to be color - checked when it reaches thespinning mill. It also means the merchant can be confidentof delivering exactly what the customer specified.Every element of the USTER ® HVI 1000 has been designedwith the latest technology, to ensure that the data deliveredis accurate. This technology includes the FIBER COMB,COMB MOISTURE, XENON FLASH, automatic sampling, and on - board diagnostics – all developed on the basis ofUSTER ’s years of practical experience in fiber testing.Top technology supporting thebig decisions– Million dollar fiber - purchasingdecisions require accuratedecision data– USTER ® HVI 1000 is built ona solid heritage of cottonclassification experience– Patented technology andUSTER’s unique know - how andexperience deliver unmatchedaccuracy in testing results– Machine performance isconstantly monitored to insurethe highest level of operationTop:Color measurement of theUSTER ® HVI 1000 utilizing thepatented XENON FLASHBottom:Length and strength measurementwith USTER ® HVI 1000 FIBER COMBand COMB MOISTURE

Accurate and consistent measurementfor true valuesThe FIBER COMB is critical to the length and strengthmeasurement of the USTER ® HVI 1000. This is a uniqueUSTER design which provides the most accurate andcomparable data in the market, combined with itsautomatic sampling function.Such tests require standard laboratory conditions – notalways easy to achieve. The COMB MOISTURE technologywith USTER ® HVI 1000 has the solution, allowingmeasurements to be corrected to reflect true values understandard conditions. Another example of USTER ’s unrivaledexperience being applied to develop ideal technology. The accuracy of data from the USTER ® HVI 1000 is apriority for USTER, but equally important is monitoring ofthe operating condition of the instrument itself. This isespecially important for a cotton - classing business, wherethe USTER ® HVI 1000 is actually the ‘production’ machine –the basis for market valuations. Cotton testing has tobe maintained at a high level, and machine stops arepotentially damaging for the business. So USTER hasequipped the USTER ® HVI 1000 with onboard diagnostics,so that downtime can be minimized.StrengthYarn and fabric fineness •LengthLength uniformityFineness / MicronaireTrashColorNepsShort fiberUV FluorescenceYarn and fabric strength • • •Nep formation during processing • •Yarn evenness • • •Yarn imperfection • • • •Processing waste • • • • •End breaks in spinning • • • • •Textile - machinery contamination/component wear•Cotton dust levels •Weaving efficiency •Fabric neppiness •Fabric appearance and barré • • • •FrequencyTop:Fiber properties (right)and processing characteristicsaffected (left)–6s –4s –2s 0 +2s +4s +6sVariationUSTER ® HVI Competition s: Standard deviationBottom:Measurement accuracy – USTERversus other available instrumentson the market

Examples of these instruments arerepresented by the USTER ® FIBROGRAPH for the measurementof the fiber length and the USTER ® STELOMETER for themeasurement of the fiber strength.Spinlab was acquired by Uster Technologies in 1990which marked the introduction of the USTER ® HVI 900 witha semiautomatic and an automatic version. The automaticversion eliminated the need for the operator to manuallyprepare the sample for the length and strength measurement, greatly improving the data accuracy of the HVI ® .A modular system allows to tailorthe product configuration to one’sneed. Starting from the basicmodule further modules can beadded. The first classing lines for USDA in the 1970’s used low -volume type fiber - testing instruments. Uster Technologiesstarted with High -Volume Instruments (HVI ® ) for the measurementof cotton in 1984. This instrument, SPINLABHVI 800, was first used in the classification of cotton on alarge scale by the United States Department of Agriculture(USDA). A few years later HVI ® systems were also sold tospinning mills for the control of cotton purchasing and theirbale laydown management. The next generation of fiber bundle testing systems was theUSTER ® HVI SPECTRUM with improved features in 1998.The USTER ® HVI 1000 was introduced to the market in 2005with a higher testing capacity, and a minimum of operators. In addition, the footprint of the instrument was reducedconsiderably compared to the older - generation instruments. This latest generation HVI ® is the world reference for cottonclass i fi cation and establishing universal HVI ® referencecotton values.
