6.5.1 Yarra River Mainstream Study AreaThe Yarra River Mainstream Study Area covers an area of 1,238km 2 , and islocated through the centre of the Shire of Yarra Ranges. Figure 7 shows theStudy Area, with the waterways and drains shown. Major points include thefollowing:• The Yarra River is the major waterway for the Shire, which flows fromthe north-east of the study area to the western boundary. A number oftributaries flow into the Yarra River.• The Don River is a major tributary to the Upper Yarra River• The Yarra River originates within the municipality and flows throughMelbourne before entering Port Phillip Bay.• The majority of the upper catchment is protected forest.• The Upper Yarra Reservoir (200,000 ML) is located 24km east ofWarburton.• The Yarra River Mainstream Study Area is either forested or urban witha significant proportion not connected to Council drainage. Townshipssuch as Warburton, Healesville, Woori Yallock and Chirnside Park haveYarra Ranges drainage.• Major drains managed and maintained by Melbourne Water in the StudyArea include:oooChirnside Main Drain, Paynes Road Drain and Cherry Hill Drain(Chirnside Park)Yarra Glen Main Drain (Yarra Glen)Woori Yallock Main Drain Diversion (Woori Yallock)• In the vicinity of Yering, Melbourne Water is responsible for theLilyponds Creek open channels.20 Melbourne Water Shire of Yarra Ranges Flood Management Plan
