6.5 Study Area Features and Historical Flood IssuesThe Shire of Yarra Ranges thriving local economy is supported by the food andwine industry and the tourism industry both of which are dependent onhealthy rainfall totals and healthy waterways.The following points are of note:• The main water feature through the study area is the Yarra River whichoutfalls to the west and continues on through Greater Melbourne untilultimately discharging to Port Philip Bay.• Apart from the Yarra River, other main drains and waterways subject toflooding in the 100 year ARI event (of those waterways which are floodmapped) include the Little Yarra River, Watts River, Olinda Creek,Cherry Hill Drain, Chirnside Park Drain, Bushy Creek Lower, MonbulkCreek, Ferny Creek and Eumemmerring Creek.• Land use in the Yarra Ranges Shire is a mixture of urban, rural andNational Park areasDue to the size of the Shire of Yarra Ranges, this Flood Management Plan isbroken down into seven separate study areas as shown in Figure 6.The seven study areas are based on the existing drainage lines and are asfollows:• Yarra River Mainstream Study Area• Woori Yallock Creek Study Area• Cardinia Creek Study Area• Upper Dandenong Creek Study Area• Olinda Creek Study Area• Watts River Study Area• Steels Creek Study Area18 Melbourne Water Shire of Yarra Ranges Flood Management Plan
