On a streetcar heading to work during herfirst days in Hollywood she noticed a tall and striking stranger. FrankO’Connor was exactly the type of man Rand found most attractive. Toher joy, she realized they were both heading to the same destination, DeMille’s King of Kings set. After changing into her costume she spottedhim again, attired as a Roman soldier, complete with toga and headdress.Rand followed his every move for days. A few years later he followed thestudios west, arriving in Hollywood around the same time as Rand. Likeher, he was entranced by the flash and sophistication of the movies. The similarities ended there. Where Ayn was outspoken and bold,Frank was taciturn and retiring. She was mercurial, stubborn, and driven;he was even-keeled, irenic, and accommodating. Most important, Frankwas used to strong women. He was intrigued by Ayn’s strong opinionsand intellectual bent and was willing to let her steer the relationship.Rand was captivated, both by Frank’s gentle manner and by his goodlooks. She worshipped the beauties of Hollywood, but with her square
