Almost thirty years earlier Harry Portnoy,one of Anna’s relatives, had emigrated to America, and her family hadhelped pay the passage. Now one of Harry’s children, Sara Lipski, wroteinquiring about the Rosenbaums, for they had heard nothing duringthe wartime years. Alisa saw her chance. Using her connections to thePortnoys she could obtain a visa to <strong>visit</strong> the United States; once thereshe could find a way to stay forever.
