Lama’s family, and it was through them that myfirst meeting with him was arranged.In his 1993 public address, the Dalai Lamaspoke of the importance of relating as one humanbeing to another, and it was this very samequality that had been the most striking feature ofour first conversation at his home in 1982. Heseemed to have an uncommon ability to put onecompletely at ease, to quickly create a simpleand direct connection with a fellow human being.Our first meeting had lasted around forty-fiveminutes, and like so many other people, I cameaway from that meeting in great spirits, with theimpression that I had just met a truly exceptionalman.As my contact with the Dalai Lama grew overthe next several years, I gradually came toappreciate his many unique qualities.
