SGA
Gives
Back By Rianna Wasson
The true spirit of the holiday
season is about giving to others in need,
which is why SGA paired with the Head
Start Program of Fort Myers to provide
toys for over 80 children enrolled at
Edgewood, Orangewood, and Franklin
Park Elementary Schools. All clubs at
FMHS were invited to sponsor a child or
multiple children to provide toys for. The
SGA Advisor, Ms. Kirk, said every
member of SGA received one or
two students to purchase
toys approximately
$10 in
value
Got Bowls?
By Genevieve Horton
Fort Myers High School took part in the empty-bowls benefit
for Harry Chapin Food Bank. Ceramics 1, 2, and 3 students created
over 150 handcrafted bowls for this event. Along with other
Lee County schools, the event at Alliance of the Arts raised over
$10,000. Excellent job giving back to our community!
and age and content appropriate, plus
reflecting varying multicultural backgrounds.
Together the club wrapped
all of the toys to be delivered to the elementary
school classrooms. For everyone
who donated toys to this wonderful
program, SGA and the Head Start
Program thank you very much. “I love
knowing that I have the opportunity
to help a child in the community
have a memorable
Christmas,” says Morgan
Bauman. All of the
children look forward
every year to receiving
these toys, and usually
send a “thank
you” note back to
FMHS showing
their appreciation.
DANCE

Superiors in FBA
Competition
On November 5th, The Fort
Myers High School Marching Band
competed in the Florida Band Association,
a competition held every year at
Fort Myers High School featuring all
bands from all over Florida. The highest
rank is superior and this year Fort
Myers achieved just that. The Fort Myers
High School Marching Band is led
by Mark Dahlberg and consists of more
than 100 members. Mr. Dahlberg, band
director at FMHS for ten years, has received
superiors every year since he has
started teaching here. Mr. Dahlberg
says he feels “awesome and amazing
and is proud of the band and all of its
hard work and dedication.” The students
have worked very hard during
countless rehearsals
and outside practices
for this and were
well-prepared for
their win. To improve
overall, the band as a
whole watches videos
of their Friday
night performances,
analyze it and then rehearse
on the field in
preparation for Friday
Night as well as competitions
like FBA. So
By Brooke Boers
you may be wondering what the key
to getting superiors is? Dahlberg told
Tidal Wave that being motivated, having
exciting shows and always wanting
more is a huge factor in being successful
in FBA. With a decade of straight
superiors the FMHS Marching Band
will continue to pick and design shows
with the football, high school crowds
in mind. Such songs as Cee Lo Green’s
“Forget You” and last year’s “Bad Romance”
by Lady Gaga are a true testament
to that statement. “I will continue
to want to be bigger and better than the
year before” says Mr. Dahlberg. Congratulations
CONTEST
By Olivia Hilfiker
“I’m a trooper, and I’m expecting to make a comeback!”
says Yole Oscar, a contender in the dance contest of the
second even more exciting pep rally of the 2011 school year.
I bet you’re wondering why Yole wants to make a comeback?
Of course she was known for her “prediction” of
winning the dance contest; but all that changed
when Andy Perez got more cheers than her. Everyone
was flabbergasted when Andy Perez (a
freshman!) used his rockin’ moves to dominate
all the other competitors on that dance floor.
Of all the other students trying
to win, he got the victory.
He said he feels ecstatic about
winning and he’s only taken
one hip hop class in the past.
Everyone did a brilliant job
dancing and amazed FMHS
with the bravery to “shake
their groove thang” in front
of the whole school.
STEP TEAM
By Olivia Hilfiker
A club starting only last year,
the Step Team got their big spotlight
on the floor at the second pep rally
of this year. With a cool explosion of
stepping and moving, the crowd was
amazed at the team’s ability to work
together and coordinate such an
extraordinary performance.
Carsi Bellamy and Chante’
Robinson, the team captains
say, “We strive for
one step, one sound.”
Words of a Champ...
By Courtney Oleksa WAVE
“Practice. Eat Healthy.
Sleep.”
- Michael Messuri
FMHS swimmer Michael Messuri is a
nationally-ranked swimmer after placing 1st in
the 500 Free along with 6th in the 200 Free at the
States meet in Orlando. His 500 Free time was
4:29.79, which led him to a close win with only
.054 of a second to spare. As for his future, Michael
is only a junior, but says he wishes to go to
college on a swimming scholarship. When asked
what colleges he is considering, his top choice
was FSU. A big “congrats” goes out to Michael
and all of the other swimmers who competed!
Best of luck next season to our swim team!
Volleyball Team
State Runners-Up
By Rianna Wasson and Shion Kremer
For the third year, our Greenwave
Volleyball team traveled north to compete
in the Class 6A Title Match. Over the season,
they have accrued twenty-seven wins
and only three losses, which led them to
compete against Tallahassee Leon at Silver
Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, FL. Our
girls have worked extremely hard during
their countless hours of training and practice
throughout the school year, but in the
end, they weren’t able to overcome Leon.
Co-Captain Rachael Schaaf says, “It was
such a great experience to share with my
teammates because many teams do not
have the opportunity to go to states at all.”
The girls all were disappointed with the
loss, but getting to even participate in this
prestigious match was phenomenal. Coach
Stephanie Martin and the returning players
are hoping to snatch the state title next year.
Be sure to congratulate all of the girls varsity
volleyball players on a fantastic season!
Setting a
Record
By Genevieve Horton
Basketball season is back! FMHS
congratulates the players of our 2011-
2012 Boys Varsity Basketball team! Basketball
set off the season with the game
against Bishop Verot. We ended the game
with 13 two point field goals, 3 three point
field goals, and 14 free throws giving us a
total of 49 points. In our game against Cypress,
we made 19 two point field goals,
6 three point field goals, and 10 free
throws ending the game with 66 points. In
our most recent game against South, we
scored 10 two point field goals, 7 three
point field goals, and 13 free throws winning
the game with 54 points. We have a
stimulating season coming up. Make sure
to come out and support! Good luck boys!
:One Goal at a Time
“Score!” That’s what FMHS
senior Haley Emerson heard as she
broke the goal record for Fort Myers.
Scoring three of the eight goals
last game, she has now achieved
104 goals in her FMHS career.
Haley demonstrated her leadership
skills when they were playing ECS
with five minutes left in the game.
Fort Myers was down 2-1 and
Haley wasn’t going to let her team
lose. She dribbled the ball past
three defenders and scored, bringing
the game to a tie. During her
soccer career at FMHS she scored
10 goals as a freshman, 24 goals as
a sophomore, 40 goals as a junior,
and has already scored 16 goals as
a senior. Coach Kara Martin says,
“She’s a workhorse, she’s a leader,
By Katherine Strange
and she’s going to work as hard
as anyone else on the field.” The
previous record holder was Kim
Tingley, who went on to play
at James Madison University.
Haley has committed to playing
soccer at Louisiana State University,
which is ranked 18th in the
nation. Congratulations Haley!
“I’m trying
not to focus on
the record as
much as I am
winning!”

Every year, Fort Myers High asks its
students to take time out of their day to give
blood. This year was no different. Students
could be seen throughout the halls wearing
their new T-shirt, eating some free food, and
sporting a bandage around their arm. Everyone
knows giving blood is a good thing to do,
but why? Well for starters, in order to have a
constant blood supply, hospitals need around
800 donors per week. Another unique fact
is that blood can be separated into different
parts. The platelets may go to a child with
Blood Drive
By Emily Campbell
As you’ve probably heard by now, thanks to the efforts of
the entire FMHS Community, we donated 5,611 pounds of food to
CCMI-twice what both schools contributed last year, winning over
Bishop Verot by forfeit. With all classes participating in this friendly
competition all for a good cause. Coming in 1st place, we have Ms.
Kirk’s 5th period class. In 2nd place, we have Mr. Eichbauer’s 5th
period class. Last, but not least, coming in 3rd place we have Mrs.
Joyner-Hull’s 5th period. Congratulations to all classes leaving a positive
review from the CCMI members. The CCMI members wrote
“The students at Fort Myers High School are another true example
of the thoughtful, caring youth in our southwest Florida community.
We appreciate your effort and generosity.” in their website under success.
leukemia, the plasma to a patient with
a clotting problem and the red blood
cells to an accident victim. Blood donors
have to be seventeen or older,
or sixteen with parental consent, and
weigh at least 115 pounds; however,
there are several reasons for a donor to
be prevented from participating. Reasons
include having a cold the day of
donation, having a history of certain diseases, or being on
certain medication. Giving blood may seem scary at first,
but donating just one pint could save someone else’s life.
