Components of intermediate filaments provideinformation on the origin of vertebrate cells. Antibody to vimentincan be used as to identify the vimentin subclass of intermediatefilaments. Vimentin is a widely expressed protein that is thought tobe involved mainly in structural processes, such as wound healing.Researchers have also determined that activated human macrophagessecrete vimentin into the extracellular space, and overproduction ofvimentin has been associated with cellular senescence. (1) Rhoassociatedkinase (Rho-kinase) phosphorylates vimentin at serines 38and 71. Vimentin phosphorylated by Rho-kinase loses its ability toform filaments in vitro.
