PREPARATORY SCHOOL NEWSWednesday 11 March 2009 Term 1 - Number 7 Email:cwatkins@kws.nsw.edu.auDear ParentsParents often ask ‘How can we support our child during their time at school?’ The answer is Reading –whether it be listening to them read, reading to them or sharing a book together.Everyone leads busy lives but the benefits of reading are enormous. It impacts in every area of our lives andthose of our children. We need to encourage our children to read for at least fifteen minutes a day whether inbed, at the kitchen table, in the car on the way to school or on the verandah.‘We don’t have any suitable books!’ – We have a very extensive library and our teaching and library staff areonly too happy to guide you.Our younger classes have home readers. Try to take time to sit with them and listen to their reading.Reading is part of the process – comprehension is the other. Ask your child a question about what they’rereading or describe what is happening in the picture. Keep it informal – they don’t need to be interrogated!!As explained above for fifteen minutes a day you are building the foundation for life-long learning.Recently we inducted our Prefects and House Captains as well as presenting Peer Support badges to our Year6’s.It gives me great delight in announcing our leaders of Music for 2009.Congratulations to:Prep Band:Prep Strings:Prep Choir 5/6:Sarah SpinaElizabeth BiltonAsher Dixon and Kate Glastonbury. They were presented with their badges at this week’s assembly. We wish all our HICES swimmers all the best as they compete against other schools in Sydney this week.Enjoy your week of readingRegardsRob McLeanHead of PreparatoryPEER SUPPORT 2009This is the second week that we have focused on the behaviour of bystanders during Peer Support. This week, childrenwill practise ways of responding to bullying whether they are directly involved or not, by talking to the child doing thebullying, the child being bullied or a responsible adult. We use a TURN, TALK and TELLmodel to support children to develop strategies for dealing with bullying behaviours. This isnot easy for many young people so your child may need encouragement to persevere.

A number of the parent surveys have been returned and the valuable feedback has been positive and reaffirming. If youstill intend to provide feedback please return your form to the office by Friday 13 March.ASSEMBLY AWARDSMerit Awards: Gidgette Pratten, Charlotte Hewitt, Jonty King-Christopher, Sameeka L’Estrange,Mia Majoram, Stanley Zhang, Charlie Hobbs, Harry Houghton, Sally Crossing, Lizzie Kwa, EmmaChoi, Victoria Samways, Max Jorquera, Ethan Buesnel, Ethan Rutherford, Grace McRae, JoelFurness, Oscar Tierney, Max Summers, Owen Bloomfield, Rosie Lambert, Liam Choi, AlanahSeedsman, Danie McLoughlin, Bradman Gavin, Anneka Graham, Rhett Wheelhouse, HaideeWatson, Logan Buckley, Christopher McClare, Fletcher Rose, Zac Condon, Charlotte May, AngusSeddon, Chelsea Foster, Sosaia Faiva, Maggie Smith, Louisa Gilmore, Eva Bloomfield, CharlotteAnderson, Hannah Solari, Ailish Seedsman, Jess Amos, Myriam Kwa, Jemima McCalman, AlexHewitt, Jamie-Lee McLoughlin, Lilla McKenzie, Alice Litchfield, Jemima McPhee, Chelsea Shrimpton,Babs king-Christopher, Kiara Taylorwood-Roe, Jack Bilton, Angus Crossing, Henry Welsh, TeresaDowney, Mindy Khin, Kate Hall, Sebastian Smith, Dylan Swain, Lizzie Silvester, Brianna Chu,Johannah Collins, Isabella Foster, Zoe Pickford, Harrison Rees, Canada Gavin, Myra Lim-Hurt,Tracey Kasjan, Charlie Steele-Park, Chris Wood, Imogen Rosborough, Lizzie Bilton x 2, MollyHansen x 2, Jayden Watson, Clare Gavin, Sam Pasquali, George Brownlow, Sarah Spina x 2, EddieKennelly, Monique Pasquali x 2, Liam Taylorwood-Roe, Sophia Cassimatis, Bronie Condon, NikkiD’Aquino, Josh Cheney, Alasdair Denholm, Josie Bloomfield x 2, Isobel McCalman, Jeremy Brill,Beau Meehan, Lachlan Priest, Hunter Rose, Ethan Teber-Rossi.Courtesy: Lachlan Brown, Charlie Hobbs, Sameeka L’Estrange, Harry Houghton, Lizzie Kwa,Bailie-Rose Miller, Ethan Buesnel, Grace McRae, Elizabeth Silvester, Georgia Lewis-Minogue,Florence Conway, Jamie-Lee McLoughlin, Kelsea Bellamy, Trent Russell, Emily Saran, SebSamodol, Emily Symes, Alex Mirrington, Kate Hall, Mindy Khin, Callie-Jane Jeffress, Samuel Lewis-Minogue, Olivia Trethowan, Cecilia Carter, Jayden Watson, Lindsay Hartnig, Angus McIntosh,Jeremy Brill, Kate Glastonbury, Bronie Condon, Nikki D’Aquino, Annabelle Binnie, Lachie Smith,Niamh McPhee.Citizenship: Jonty King-Christopher, Emma Choi, Annie Pattinson, Harry Houghton, Will Rouse,Phoebe Litchfield, Ethan Rutherford, Isobel McCalman, Fletcher Weber, Bronie Condon, Harry May,Maddie Smith, Ben Bellamy, Saskia Smith, Louisa Gilmore, Saskia Smith, Kyle Furness, ChelseaFoster, Joshua Chai, Eva Bloomfield, Jess Amos, Monique Worsley, Isabella Rees, Emerson Miller,Nicholas Pasquali, Harrison Rees, Isabella Foster, Sophie Fenton, Hugh Britton, Oscar Savage,Callie-Jane Jeffress, Samuel Lewis-Minogue, Lizzie Bilton, Richard Pattinson, Brianna Chu, BronieCondon, Kate Hall, Meg Wheelhouse, Jemima McCalman, Oscar Savage, Ward Strutt, Fiona Hill,Hunter Rose, Annabelle Tierney, Kelsey Gray.Ashton Scholastic Book Club issue 2 has now been distributed.
