386841226. The Tri<strong>al</strong> Chamber has received evidence about the civilian presence in Knin atthe start of Operation Storm from sever<strong>al</strong> witnesses.1227. Marko Rajčić testified that in June 1995, he received information from Serbacquaintances that civilians began leaving Knin when the HV took control over thedominant features of Mount Dinara. 4499 Based on an an<strong>al</strong>ysis of the information he hadat the time, Rajčić testified that there were b<strong>et</strong>ween 2,000 and 3,000 civilians in the sixsquare-kilom<strong>et</strong>rearea of the s<strong>et</strong>tlement of Knin, which he based on a 1990 census of12,300 inhabitants, from which he subtracted the approximately 1,600 Croats and otherswho left before Operation Storm, as well as the population of able-bodied men aged 18to 60, who had been mobilized. 4500 Rajčić <strong>al</strong>so had some information that civilians fromGrahovo and Glamoč, in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Strmica, in Knin municip<strong>al</strong>ity, weregoing to Knin, while others from those areas were heading to Drvar, in Bosnia-Herzegovina. 45011228. On 30 July 1995, HV Rear admir<strong>al</strong> Davor Domaz<strong>et</strong> reported that the HV’s takingof Grahovo, in Bosnia-Herzegovina, on 28 July 1995 had created conditions for it tothreaten Knin directly, which had caused loc<strong>al</strong> Serbs to fear an HV attack on the entireRSK. 4502 Domaz<strong>et</strong> further stated that more and more people were leaving the Krajinaarea and moving to the Republika Srpska and the FRY, <strong>al</strong>though the latter had issued adecree closing its borders with Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia out of fear of a massinflux of people from the Republika Srpska and RSK. Those who could not leave werepreparing shelters in houses, and evacuation routes had been designated. 45031229.
