38975Lapac. 2535 The witness saw two or three buildings smouldering in the town centre. 2536The witness testified that their commanders were then joined by Markač. 2537 Tog<strong>et</strong>herwith Markač, they visited the UNPROFOR base in the northern part of Donji Lapac andhad a me<strong>et</strong>ing there. Markač told UNPROFOR members that they were part of theCroatian armed forces and, according to the witness, UN soldiers came out of theirshelters, seemed happy and hugged each other. Markač left right after the me<strong>et</strong>ing. 2538602. The witness testified that he and his unit stayed in Donji Lapac until the arriv<strong>al</strong>of the HV in the afternoon of 7 August 1995. 2539 Then they withdrew to a haml<strong>et</strong> on theoutskirts of Donji Lapac, about one kilom<strong>et</strong>re from the centre, to spend the night. 2540This was the first time since the beginning of the operation that the witness saw HVmembers. 2541 From the haml<strong>et</strong>, the witness heard lots of firing in Donji Lapac. 2542 Earlyin the morning on 8 August 1995 they received the order from their commander toadvance towards Kulen Vakuf. 2543 Leaving the place where they had spent the night, thewitness noticed smoke rising from many buildings and houses in Donji Lapac. 2544 Thewitness stated that no member of the Speci<strong>al</strong> Police was involved in the burning inDonji Lapac. 2545 Once the witness and his unit reached the area of Boričevac, DonjiLapac municip<strong>al</strong>ity, and Kulen Vakuf, they waited <strong>al</strong>l day as a reserve force in fullcombat gear but were never engaged. 2546 Eventu<strong>al</strong>ly, after a me<strong>et</strong>ing with the head ofthe Speci<strong>al</strong> Police sector, Željko Sačić, the units which had been engaged in combatsince the beginning of the operation were released and the witness with his unit wereordered to r<strong>et</strong>urn to Varaždin, which they did, passing through Udbina. 2547603.
