2848 GEORGIA AND GEORGIANSas a director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State Experimental Farm at Griffin in Spaulding County.Mr. Evans is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Masonic fraternity <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Independent Order<strong>of</strong> Odd Fellows, <strong>and</strong> he <strong>and</strong> his family are active supporters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> BaptistChurch, in which he served as deacon for thirty years <strong>and</strong> for thirty-fiveyears as Sunday school superintendent. His continued interest in his oldcomrades <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Civil war is indicated by his active affiliation with <strong>the</strong> UnitedConfederate Veterans.On October 26, 1865, in Screven County, he married Miss Theresa Zeigler,who was born <strong>and</strong> reared in Screven County, a daughter <strong>of</strong> Israel <strong>and</strong> Margaret (Waters) Zeigler, both now deceased. Of <strong>the</strong> nine children <strong>of</strong> Mr. <strong>and</strong>Mrs. Evans, Clare diedwat <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> one year, Beulah at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> three <strong>and</strong>one half years <strong>and</strong> Margaret at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> four years; Anna is <strong>the</strong> wife <strong>of</strong>Dr. H. H. McGee, a leading physician <strong>and</strong> surgeon <strong>of</strong> Savannah <strong>and</strong> president in 1915 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> State Medical Association; Israel H. is a practical farmer in Screven County; Nettie is <strong>the</strong> wife <strong>of</strong> Augustus R. Lanier,a prosperous farmer in Johnson County; Thomas J., who received fromMercer University <strong>the</strong> degrees <strong>of</strong> Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts <strong>and</strong> Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Laws,is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> leading members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Screven County bar <strong>and</strong> was engaged inpractice at Sylvania until his election in <strong>the</strong> fall <strong>of</strong> 1914 to <strong>the</strong> bench <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>City Court, prior to which time he had served four years as city solicitor;Evalina is <strong>the</strong> wife <strong>of</strong> John C. Reddick, <strong>of</strong> whom individual mention is madeon o<strong>the</strong>r pages <strong>of</strong> this work; Grace is <strong>the</strong> wife <strong>of</strong> Peter R. Kittles, who hasorganized <strong>the</strong> National Bank <strong>of</strong> Sylvania, <strong>of</strong> which he is president."W. J. HUTCHINS, M. D. Representing <strong>the</strong> young <strong>and</strong> enthusiastic pr<strong>of</strong>essional element recruited from <strong>the</strong> farming class <strong>of</strong> Gwinnett County, Dr.W. J. Hutchins, within <strong>the</strong> short space <strong>of</strong> five years, has built up a medical<strong>and</strong> surgical practice at Buford as gratifying personally as it is promisingfinancially. He was born at Auburn, <strong>Georgia</strong>, January 30, 1887, <strong>and</strong> is ason <strong>of</strong> John <strong>and</strong> Maggie (Wages) Hutchins.Doctor Hutchins belongs to a family which has contributed members to<strong>the</strong> various pr<strong>of</strong>essions <strong>and</strong> vocations <strong>of</strong> life, <strong>and</strong> which is particularly wellknown for its accomplishments in military aifairs. A member <strong>of</strong> thist familywho fought in <strong>the</strong> war <strong>of</strong> 1812 <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Civil war <strong>and</strong> died in 1900\at <strong>the</strong>remarkable age <strong>of</strong> over one hundred <strong>and</strong> three years. Doctor Hutchins' paternalgreat-gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r fought in <strong>the</strong> Civil war, as did his paternal <strong>and</strong> maternalgr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>rs, Jackson Hutchins <strong>and</strong> Albin Wages. John Hutchins was bornin <strong>Georgia</strong> in 1848 <strong>and</strong> has passed his entire life here in agricultural pursuits, still being a resident <strong>and</strong> active farmer <strong>of</strong> Gwinnett County, wherehe is well <strong>and</strong> favorably known. Mrs. Hutchins is also a resident <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong><strong>and</strong> is forty-eight years <strong>of</strong> age. In <strong>the</strong> family <strong>the</strong>re were six children, asfollows: Dr. W. J., <strong>of</strong> this review; Thomas W., who resides at Atlanta;Humphrey <strong>and</strong> Robert, residents <strong>of</strong> Auburn; Mrs. J. C. Pool, <strong>of</strong> Dacula,<strong>Georgia</strong>; <strong>and</strong> Miss Susie, who lives with her parents at Auburn.After attending <strong>the</strong> graded <strong>and</strong> high schools <strong>of</strong> Auburn, Dr. W. J. Hutchinsentered <strong>the</strong> Atlanta College <strong>of</strong> Physicians <strong>and</strong> Surgeons, from which hewas duly graduated in 1910, with his degree <strong>of</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> Medicine. At thattime he began practice at Dacula, where he remained for two years, <strong>and</strong><strong>the</strong>n came to Buford, where he soon won friends by his genial <strong>and</strong> kindlymanner, his advocacy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> best tenets <strong>of</strong> his pr<strong>of</strong>ession, <strong>and</strong> his desire tobe <strong>of</strong> use <strong>and</strong> credit to <strong>the</strong> community which tendered him its appreciation<strong>and</strong> support. He has a large <strong>and</strong> representative general practice, <strong>and</strong> hassteadfastly advanced to a leading position among <strong>the</strong> younger members <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ession in Gwinnett County.Doctor Hutchins is a close <strong>and</strong> careful student, keeping fully abreast <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> achievements <strong>and</strong> discoveries constantly being made in medical <strong>and</strong> surgical science. He is a valued member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gwinnett County Medical Society,
