He is a valued member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> GlynnCounty Bar Association <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> State Bar Association. A democratin politics, he was chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Democratic County Executive Committeefor twelve years, but was forced to give up his connection <strong>the</strong>rewith because- <strong>of</strong> pressure <strong>of</strong> legal work. However, he still takes an interest in politicalaffairs. He served bo.th as city <strong>and</strong> county attorney, <strong>and</strong> is now a member<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> board <strong>of</strong> county commissioners. Mr. Twitty has always been one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>foremost factors, in <strong>the</strong> promotion <strong>of</strong> movements calculated to be <strong>of</strong> benefit tohis community, whe<strong>the</strong>r civic, educational, charitable or religious. He is amember <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> board <strong>of</strong> hospital trustees, is secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Glynn CountyGood Roads Association <strong>and</strong> is active in <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> First Baptist Church<strong>of</strong> Brunswick, having been <strong>the</strong> superintendent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sunday school for <strong>the</strong>past twenty years. He was for several years president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> BrunswickBoard <strong>of</strong> Trade, but this was ano<strong>the</strong>r position which he was forced to sacrificebecause <strong>of</strong> his rapidly growing pr<strong>of</strong>essional duties, which caused his resignation in June, 1914. Fraternally Mr. Twitty was a Chi Phi, Eta Chapter, University<strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>, <strong>and</strong> is a Mason, being a member <strong>of</strong> Atlanta Lodge <strong>of</strong>Master Masons, Brunswick, <strong>Georgia</strong>.JOHN D. CAKSWELD. A well known business man <strong>of</strong> Savannah, at <strong>the</strong>head <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> largest general insurance agencies in this section <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>,John D. Carswell has a record <strong>of</strong> twenty-five years' business experience.He was born in Burke County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, February 28, 1868, a son <strong>of</strong>John D. <strong>and</strong> Linda R,- (Royal) Carswell, both <strong>of</strong> whom were native<strong>Georgia</strong>ns. His fa<strong>the</strong>r was a planter, served as a private soldier in <strong>the</strong> Confederate army during ,<strong>the</strong> war, <strong>and</strong> died at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> twenty-six in 1868,before his son John, who was <strong>the</strong> second <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> children, was born. Themo<strong>the</strong>r-died in March, 1896, at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> forty-eight.Joiin D. Carswell attended country schools, <strong>the</strong> public schools <strong>of</strong> Waynesboro<strong>and</strong> in 1886 graduated as Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts from <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong><strong>Georgia</strong>. He thus started life with <strong>the</strong> foundation <strong>of</strong> a liberal education.On leaving school he was employed for several years as clerk in <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fices <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Central <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> Railway, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n entered <strong>the</strong> insurance field. Hispresent business is successor to <strong>the</strong> W. H. Daniel Company, long well knownin insurance circles in <strong>the</strong> state.Mr. Carswell is a director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chatham Bank & Trust Company, <strong>the</strong>Savannah Cotton Exchange, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Savannah Board <strong>of</strong> Trade. He is amember <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> college fraternities, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Oglethorpe Yacht Club <strong>of</strong>Savannah <strong>and</strong> in politics a democrat. He is also interested in military affairs<strong>and</strong> served with a Savannah company on Major Williams' staff.1HON. JAMES H. EVANS. In all that represents <strong>the</strong> highest civic ideals<strong>and</strong> personal rectitude <strong>and</strong> steadfastness, Hon. James Hezekiah Evans <strong>of</strong>Sylvania is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> foremost citizens <strong>of</strong> Screven County, where his influence has been given to <strong>the</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>rance <strong>of</strong> those things which conserve <strong>the</strong>moral, educational <strong>and</strong> material wellbeing <strong>of</strong> a community. The fullestmeasure <strong>of</strong> popular confidence <strong>and</strong> esteem has been conferred on him. Hehas served as representative <strong>of</strong> Screven County in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> Legislature' since 1911, <strong>and</strong> has been active <strong>and</strong> efficient in promoting wise legislationfor <strong>the</strong> benefit <strong>of</strong> his home county <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> state at large. Also he has proveda prominent factor in business <strong>and</strong> industrial enterprises, including banking,<strong>and</strong> a special tribute to him in <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> his native state is a matter <strong>of</strong>propriety.He was born in Screven County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, August 3, 1847. His parents,John Ruel Evans <strong>and</strong> Elizabeth (Lucas) Evans, were also natives <strong>of</strong> ScrevenVol. VI »-5
