GEORGIA AND GEORGIANS 2841» '.","The reason 'and-necessity of Mr. Candler's nomination at this timecould not be stated more convincingly than in Alderman Kelley's words:" 'For several years the city has been marking time, we have not madeheadway as in former days; there are too many vacant houses; there is aspirit of'discouragement. These things are due partly to conditions beyondthe control of our people, but also in large part to the loss of the communityspirit by too many of our people. Before we can go forward we must regainthat community spirit. "We can only do that by fqregoing our personal desiresand laving aside our personal ambitions out of regard to the general welfare. This d"oes' not involve any great sacrifice on our part. When, therefore, wefind one -of our citizens who is willing to make very great sacrifice in orderto serve us, it seems to "me that we can do no less than to get unitedly behindhim and give him such support as will result in again putting Atlanta in thefront rank of progressive cities.'"That is the voice of true patriotism and service. It is the voice of theAtlanta spirit which puts the common good above personal ambition; thevoice of a man who thinks more of his city than of himself."Another publication had this to say of Mr. Kelley's withdrawal:"Alderman Charles H. Kelley Friday withdrew from the race for mayorand announced his purpose to give his most cordial and ungrudging supportto Asa Gr. Candler."Mr. Kelley, who is one of the best known and most experienced membersof the city council, has been a candidate for mayor for several weeks, andboth he and his friends were confident that he would be elected."However, when the citizens' call was made upon Mr. Candler to standfor election to the mayoralty and when he consented to do so, Mr. Kelley, recognizing the great good which would come to the city as the result ofhaving Mr. Candler at the head of the municipal government, unselfishly andpatriotically decided that he wouldHiot let his own ambitions complicate thesituation."Mr. Kelley is receiving congratulations on all sides for his unselfishaction in getting out of the race and pledging his support to Mr. Candler.''Mr. Kelley was married on October 12, 1882, to Miss Louise ElizabethHairston, of Coweta County, Georgia.
