He had also been influentialin organizing <strong>the</strong> original College <strong>of</strong> Physicians <strong>and</strong> Surgeons. Ho is pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> abdominal surgery <strong>and</strong> clinical gynecology in <strong>the</strong> Atlanta School <strong>of</strong>Medicine <strong>and</strong> occupied that chair in <strong>the</strong> new school <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> old for a number<strong>of</strong> years. He is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Atlanta College <strong>of</strong> Physicians <strong>and</strong> Surgeons,is a member <strong>and</strong> for some years was vice president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> American Gynecological Society, has served as president <strong>and</strong> vice president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rnSurgical Gynecological Association, as vice president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> American MedicalAssociation in <strong>the</strong> obstetrical section, has been president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Medical Association <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>, <strong>the</strong> Atlanta Medical Society <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fulton CountyMedical Society. He also belongs to <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Medical Association, <strong>the</strong>American Association <strong>of</strong> Obstetricians, is a governor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> American College<strong>of</strong> Surgeons, is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State Committee <strong>of</strong> Physicians on recruitingservice for <strong>the</strong> Medical Corps <strong>and</strong> is a national committeeman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Red CrossAssociation. .On January 25, 1884, Doctor Noble married Miss Mary L. Taliaferro,daughter <strong>of</strong> Doctor ..Taliaferro under whom he had first studied medicine.Their marriage was an important event in Atlanta society, since it broughtabout <strong>the</strong> union <strong>of</strong> two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> oldest <strong>and</strong> best known families <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city <strong>and</strong>state. Doctor Noble was for twenty years a vestryman in St. Phillip's Episcopal Church <strong>of</strong> Atlanta, <strong>and</strong> is now senior warden <strong>and</strong> trustee.CIIARLKS GRANDT BELL. The numerous distinctions <strong>and</strong> associations <strong>of</strong>Charles Gr<strong>and</strong>y Bell with Savannah business affairs are readily recognized,but his forceful energy <strong>and</strong> creative work are not confined alone to that city.Many men place him among <strong>the</strong> leading financiers <strong>and</strong> promoters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> entireSouth.Mr. Bell performed a large <strong>and</strong> important share in increasing <strong>the</strong> prestige<strong>of</strong> Savannah as a great cotton trading center. This city has built up a reputation as a port <strong>of</strong> export for cotton with a rank among <strong>the</strong> first <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world'sports in this particular commodity. Only recently Mr. Bell -was one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>leaders in forming <strong>the</strong> Savannah Warehouse <strong>and</strong> Compress Company, whichwas organized in 19]6 <strong>and</strong> which practically fortifies Savannah's importanceas a cotton export city. This company combines all <strong>the</strong> cotton firms <strong>of</strong>Savannah <strong>and</strong> plans arc already being carried out for <strong>the</strong> construction <strong>of</strong> 100warehouses to h<strong>and</strong>le <strong>the</strong> aggregate products. The organization <strong>of</strong> this company comes at <strong>the</strong> high tide <strong>of</strong> Mr. Bell's career, <strong>and</strong> while it st<strong>and</strong>s as hismost important accomplishment to date, it only suggests what may be expected<strong>of</strong> him in <strong>the</strong> remaining years <strong>of</strong> his useful life.He has not only been a cotton merchant <strong>and</strong> exporter, but has had a prominent part in <strong>the</strong> manufacture! <strong>of</strong> fertilizers. Mr. Bell has for many years beena member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> well known firm <strong>of</strong> Butler, Stevens <strong>and</strong> Bell. Prior to tha<strong>the</strong> was an employe <strong>of</strong> Messrs. Butler <strong>and</strong> Stevens but in 1891 became a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> firm. His energy, his ability <strong>and</strong> his splendid business poise broughtfrom his employers <strong>the</strong> recognition which resulted in his being made a closerbusiness associate through <strong>the</strong> medium <strong>of</strong> a partnership.Though, .not a <strong>Georgia</strong>n by birth, Mr. Bell has spent most <strong>of</strong> his activecareer in this state. He was born near Greenville, Florida, February 9, 1858.Though fifty-eight years <strong>of</strong> age, <strong>and</strong> in spite <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> strenuous <strong>and</strong> forcefullife he has lived, he would hardly be taken to. be more than forty. He isstrong, energetic, active, constantly busy, <strong>and</strong> yet like all men <strong>of</strong> great power<strong>and</strong> execution, he has plenty time for charitable, church <strong>and</strong> civic work.The Bell family in America dates back to Richard Bell, who came fromEngl<strong>and</strong> in <strong>the</strong> seventeenth century <strong>and</strong> settled in what was <strong>the</strong>n a part <strong>of</strong>
