GEORGIA AND GEORGIANS 3321As a specialist on <strong>the</strong> diseases <strong>of</strong> women he has few peers in <strong>the</strong> entirecountry, ei<strong>the</strong>r as an individual practitioner or as a consulting authority.Much <strong>of</strong> his work has been made a matter <strong>of</strong> record through <strong>the</strong> various pr<strong>of</strong>essional organizations <strong>of</strong> which he is a member, including <strong>the</strong> Medical Association <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>, <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Gynecological Association, <strong>the</strong> Atlanta Medical Society, <strong>the</strong> Atlanta Obstetrical Society <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tri-Statc Medical Association.Many <strong>of</strong> his articles have served to advance <strong>the</strong> general knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>and</strong> have been regarded as important contributions to medicalliterature. Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se articles have been read before <strong>the</strong> variousassociations <strong>of</strong> wbieh he is a member <strong>and</strong> some have been published in medicaljournals. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first to bring his name to a wider appreciation was:'' Abortive Treatment <strong>of</strong> Mammary Abscess by a New <strong>and</strong> Effectual Compress.''Leading members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ession both in America <strong>and</strong> in Europe commentedmost favorably upon his discussion <strong>and</strong> deductions. The late Dr. J. MarionSims was especially enthusiastic in his praise. This article likewise receivededitorial endorsement in <strong>the</strong> "New Engl<strong>and</strong> Medical Monthly" <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> "Birmingham Medical Journal" <strong>of</strong> Birmingham, Engl<strong>and</strong>. Ano<strong>the</strong>r article whichattracted much discussion <strong>and</strong> secured for Doctor Noble in one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> leadingFrench medical journals praise as an "original thinker" was on "Suspension orInanition <strong>of</strong> Blood to <strong>the</strong> Brain in Asphyxia 1'clidum <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Newborn." Hefurnished aid <strong>and</strong> contributions to a paper published by <strong>the</strong> late DoctorTaliaferro on <strong>the</strong> "Uterine Tampon," which was <strong>the</strong> means <strong>of</strong> much improvement in <strong>the</strong> treating <strong>of</strong> diseases <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> womb..Doctor Noble was also author <strong>of</strong> "A More Rational Method <strong>of</strong> TreatingFlexions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Uterus;" "The Use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tampon in Pregnancy."When Doctor Noble read before <strong>the</strong> convention-<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Surgical<strong>and</strong> Gynecologists Association a paper on "A New Operation for <strong>the</strong> Relief<strong>of</strong> Prolapsus <strong>and</strong> Procidentia <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Womb," <strong>the</strong> leading members <strong>of</strong> thatorganization pronounced his <strong>the</strong> most ingenious <strong>and</strong> best operation ever devised for <strong>the</strong> purpose intended. Before <strong>the</strong> Medical Association <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>he presented a paper entitled "The Removal <strong>of</strong> Septic <strong>of</strong> Infectious Materialswith a View <strong>of</strong> Relieving Phlegmasia Alba Doleiis," <strong>and</strong> this later was followedby his report <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first <strong>and</strong> only successful case <strong>of</strong> removing a cancerouswomb in confinement. The title <strong>of</strong> his report was "A Case <strong>of</strong> Carcinoma <strong>of</strong>.<strong>the</strong> Parturient Uterus Removed Three Days After Confinement Recovering."Doctor Noble was <strong>the</strong> first surgeon to deliberately remove with success <strong>the</strong>pregnant uterus for cancer.While in <strong>the</strong> thirty odd years since he began active practice Doctor Noble'sachievements <strong>and</strong> attainments have brought him distinction such as few members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ession can expect to enjoy, he is still a hard-working, earnestminded <strong>and</strong> brilliant practitioner in his home city, <strong>and</strong> from <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> fewindividuals has Atlanta pr<strong>of</strong>ited more broadly than from Doctor Noble. Asan adjunct to his own <strong>of</strong>fice practice <strong>and</strong> as a means <strong>of</strong> furnishing adequatefacilities for carrying out his work to <strong>the</strong> best advantage Doctor Noble established Noble's Infirmary, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> leading institutions <strong>of</strong> its kind in <strong>the</strong>South. The infirmary <strong>and</strong> his <strong>of</strong>fices are located at 186 South Pryor Streetin Atlanta. For eighteen years he has been <strong>the</strong> owner <strong>of</strong> a private hospital,<strong>and</strong> his clinics have been visited by surgeons from all over <strong>the</strong> United States,Canada, <strong>and</strong> from foreign countries for <strong>the</strong> special purpose <strong>of</strong> studying hismethods <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> modern sanitary appliances. He has for a quarter<strong>of</strong> a century specialized on abdominal surgery in women's diseases, <strong>and</strong> inthat is a recognized leader. Doctor Noble lias for many years made his owndrawings <strong>of</strong> operations performed to accompany his writings on <strong>the</strong> subject.Be was one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> founders <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Grady Hospital, <strong>and</strong> has done much tomake that a great institution.
