His fa<strong>the</strong>rwas a prominent lawyer <strong>of</strong> his time <strong>and</strong> was <strong>the</strong> first solicitor-general <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Oconee Judicial Circuit. His great-gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r, Thomas McCall, was <strong>the</strong>first surveyor-general <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>, while his great-great uncle, Hugh McCall.wrote <strong>the</strong> first historical account <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>.Mr. Stanley was educated in <strong>the</strong> public schools <strong>of</strong> his home city, <strong>and</strong>early entered newspaper work. He is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> proprietors, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> DublinCourier-Herald, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> leading weeklies <strong>and</strong> small dailies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state.He has taken part as a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> Weekly Press Association,<strong>of</strong> which1 he was formerly a president, <strong>and</strong> is now its corresponding secretary, <strong>and</strong> for a number <strong>of</strong> years has been a factor in <strong>the</strong> home affaire <strong>of</strong>Dublin. For seven years he was a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> Education <strong>and</strong>for three years its president. He was instrumental in securing <strong>the</strong> moneyfrom Andrew Carnegie for a public library for Dublin <strong>and</strong> was for a number<strong>of</strong> years a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> municipal library board. As a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Dublin Board <strong>of</strong> Trade he was especially active <strong>and</strong> created its catchy slogan,"The only city in <strong>Georgia</strong> 'Dublin' all <strong>the</strong> time." In military affairs heserved as first lieutenant <strong>and</strong> captain in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> National Guard <strong>and</strong>as lieutenant-colonel <strong>and</strong> aide-de-camp on <strong>the</strong> staff <strong>of</strong> Governor W. Y. Atkinson.In <strong>the</strong> Knights <strong>of</strong> Pythias order he is a past gr<strong>and</strong> chanceller <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Gr<strong>and</strong> Lodge <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>, held <strong>the</strong> position <strong>of</strong> lieutenant <strong>and</strong> captain in <strong>the</strong>military branch <strong>of</strong> that order <strong>and</strong> is now colonel <strong>and</strong> assistant quartermastergeneral<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> Brigade. Politically, he is a democrat.December 31, 1890, Mr. Stanley married Miss E<strong>the</strong>l Stubbs, daughter <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> late Col. John Madison <strong>and</strong> Ella Tucker Stubbs. Colonel Stabbs wasa lawyer <strong>of</strong> marked ability <strong>and</strong> was <strong>the</strong> chief promoter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Macon, Dublin& Savannah Railroad,, <strong>of</strong> which he was general counsel for a number <strong>of</strong>years. Dr. Nathan Tucker, Mrs. Stanley's maternal gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r, was one<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most distinguished physicians <strong>of</strong> his time in Middle <strong>Georgia</strong>, <strong>and</strong> was<strong>the</strong> medical adviser <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late Governor George M. Troup.To Mr. <strong>and</strong> Mrs. Stanley were born four children, Lytton MeCall, MaudeStubbs, Harry McCall <strong>and</strong> John Madison, <strong>the</strong> latter now deceased. Mr.Stanley has <strong>of</strong>fices in <strong>the</strong> State Capitol at Atlanta, resides in Decatur, thoughhis permanent address is Dublin.VIVIAN LEE STANLEY. It is only <strong>the</strong> unusual citizen who can occupysuch a distinguished position <strong>and</strong> exercise such influence in a community asVivian Lee Stanley in Dublin <strong>and</strong> Laurens County. What is teue <strong>of</strong> Mr.Stanley, who is now serving as postmaster <strong>of</strong> Dublin, has been true <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Stanley family since <strong>the</strong> very earliest settlement <strong>of</strong> Laurens County. Whileclosely identified with social <strong>and</strong> civic affairs, <strong>the</strong> Stanleys have been notedfor <strong>the</strong>ir independence <strong>of</strong> thought <strong>and</strong> action ever since <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong>settlement here. In <strong>the</strong> early days when <strong>the</strong> Stanleys were among <strong>the</strong> firstfamilies <strong>of</strong> Laurens County along with such o<strong>the</strong>rs as <strong>the</strong> Guytons, <strong>the</strong> Troups.<strong>the</strong> Tuckers, <strong>the</strong> Blackshears, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fordhams, it was customary <strong>and</strong> conventional according to <strong>the</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> time for all such prominentfamilies to have wine cellars in <strong>the</strong>ir homes. The Stanleys were a notableexception, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y stood for prohibition <strong>and</strong> temperance at a time whensuch ideas had hardly gained root in <strong>the</strong> public conscience.It was at Dublin in Laurens County that Vivian Lee Stanley was bornJanuary 6, 1870. His parents were Capt. Rollin A. <strong>and</strong> Martha R. (Low<strong>the</strong>r)Stanley. Both parents were born in Laurens County. Captain Rollinwas a son <strong>of</strong> Ira <strong>and</strong> Janet Harris (McCall) Stanley. Janet Harris McCallwas one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn belles <strong>of</strong> her time, <strong>and</strong> at a banquet given in honor<strong>of</strong> General LaFayette, during his visit to <strong>the</strong> United States <strong>and</strong> while he wasentertained at Savannah, she was a .guest. Her fa<strong>the</strong>r, Thomas McCall, was<strong>the</strong> first surveyor-general <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>, <strong>and</strong> was a well known figure in early
