GEORGIA AND GEORGIANS 3309Brunswick; Robert Riley, Jr., who was born at Brunswick in 1887, receivedhis education <strong>the</strong>re <strong>and</strong> is now connected with <strong>the</strong> Dupont Powder Companyat Hopetown, Virginia, a village which in December, 1915, was practicallydestroyedby fire; Thomas S. Hopkins born at Brunswick in 1890, is nowproprietor <strong>and</strong> manager <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hopkins Wood & Coal Company <strong>of</strong> Brunswick, <strong>and</strong> by his marriage to Miss Angeline Stewart <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> has a sonRobert Hopkins, Jr., born in June, 1915; Mary Louise Hopkins, <strong>the</strong> fourthchild, was bom at Brunswick <strong>and</strong> educated <strong>the</strong>re <strong>and</strong> in schools elsewhere, isliving 'With her parents, as is also Miss Elizabeth Jennie, <strong>the</strong> youngest child.John Hunter Hopkins received his early education in <strong>the</strong> public schools <strong>of</strong>Brunswick, attended <strong>the</strong> high school, <strong>and</strong> also took business courses atPoughkeepsie, New York, <strong>and</strong> Savannah, <strong>Georgia</strong>. Returning from school hebecame associated with his fa<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>the</strong> lumber business <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y are nowtoge<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>the</strong> real estate, insurance <strong>and</strong> various o<strong>the</strong>r enterprises longassociated with <strong>the</strong> name. In 1910 Mr. Hopkins was elected an alderman, <strong>and</strong>filled that <strong>of</strong>fice for three successive terms. He was first elected mayor <strong>of</strong>Brunswick in 1913 <strong>and</strong> is now in his third successive term. His administrationhas been one <strong>of</strong> characteristic vigor, competency <strong>and</strong> honesty, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> cityowes much to him as its executive <strong>of</strong>ficial.Mr. Hopkins is affiliated with <strong>the</strong> Benevolent <strong>and</strong> Protective Order <strong>of</strong> Elks<strong>and</strong> Knights <strong>of</strong> Pythias, is a very active member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Episcopal Church, <strong>and</strong>is on <strong>the</strong> executive committee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Brunswick Board <strong>of</strong> Trade. Anythingthat pertains to <strong>the</strong> welfare <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city is his own personal concern, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>quality <strong>of</strong> public spirit has been one .<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most distinctive characteristics <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Hopkins family. A few years ago Mr. Hopkins organized <strong>the</strong> HopkinsSupply Company for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> furnishing at a moderate cost all classes <strong>of</strong>supplies to <strong>the</strong> building trade, <strong>and</strong> he has already brought that enterprise tosuccessful <strong>and</strong> extensive proportions.In November, 1908, Mr. Hopkins married Miss Irene Wood <strong>of</strong> Brunswick, daughter <strong>of</strong> Mr. <strong>and</strong> Mrs. A. B. Wood <strong>of</strong> this city. They are <strong>the</strong> parents<strong>of</strong> two children: Irene Hopkins, born December 10, 1909; <strong>and</strong> John HunterHopkins, Jr., born in June, 1912. Mr. <strong>and</strong> Mrs. Hopkins reside in one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>finest homes in Brunswick, a place distinguished for hospitality <strong>and</strong> as a socialcenter <strong>and</strong> for many evidences <strong>of</strong> culture. Mr. Hopkins possesses a fine private library <strong>and</strong> both he <strong>and</strong> his wife have always interested <strong>the</strong>mselves in <strong>the</strong>es<strong>the</strong>tic things <strong>of</strong> life.J. H. PATE. A young lawyer who has done much to prove his ability .<strong>and</strong>open a way for a large <strong>and</strong> successful career in <strong>the</strong> law, J. H. Pate has been aresider?" -^ Ashburn since 1905, <strong>and</strong> has had several <strong>of</strong>ficial distinctions sincebeginr bractice. He possesses youth, ambition <strong>and</strong> energy, toge<strong>the</strong>r with abroad \ <strong>of</strong> responsibility <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> individual to <strong>the</strong> community, <strong>and</strong> he isalready recognized leader in Turner County affairs.He was born in Wileox County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, July 17,1882, a son <strong>of</strong> B. S. <strong>and</strong>Nancy (Pitts) Pate, <strong>the</strong> former now fifty-one <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> latter fifty years <strong>of</strong> age.His fa<strong>the</strong>r was born in Wileox County <strong>and</strong> his mo<strong>the</strong>r in Dooly County. Hisfa<strong>the</strong>r has for a number <strong>of</strong> years been engaged in farming <strong>and</strong> also in <strong>the</strong>naval stores business at Arabi, <strong>Georgia</strong>.The oldest <strong>of</strong> eight children, J. H. Pate gained his education in <strong>the</strong> publicschools <strong>of</strong> Wileox. County, also attended <strong>the</strong> agricultural college at Dahlonega<strong>and</strong> in 1902 took his law degree from Mercer University. He was admittedto <strong>the</strong> bar when not yet twenty-one years <strong>of</strong> age, <strong>and</strong> did his first practice atTipton, where he remained until September 11, 1905, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n moved to <strong>the</strong>new county seat <strong>of</strong> Turner County, <strong>and</strong> has since enjoyed a substantial practiceat Ashburn. He is now serving as prosecuting attorney <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> City Court atAshburn, having been elected to that <strong>of</strong>fice in 1915.Mr. Pate is also interested in <strong>the</strong> automobile business <strong>and</strong> has <strong>the</strong> localVol. VI 84
