Of fraternal societies, lie is connected with<strong>the</strong> Benevolent <strong>and</strong> Protective Order <strong>of</strong> Elks. Be <strong>and</strong> his wife are eminentamong <strong>the</strong> Methodists <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city <strong>and</strong> state, Mrs. Jones being an important<strong>of</strong>ficer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Missionary Society as well as being o<strong>the</strong>rwise active, <strong>and</strong> herhusb<strong>and</strong> serving <strong>the</strong> church as a steward <strong>and</strong> as a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> North<strong>Georgia</strong> Conference <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Methodist Episcopal Church Society.As <strong>the</strong> Thompson family is so closely associated with <strong>the</strong> affairs <strong>of</strong> Garl<strong>and</strong>Jones <strong>and</strong> his wife, Lucile Thompson Jones, it is consistent that we shouldhere note <strong>the</strong> main details <strong>of</strong> tbe interesting achievements <strong>and</strong> high st<strong>and</strong>ing<strong>of</strong> Mrs. Jones' fa<strong>the</strong>r, Berryman T. Thompson. In <strong>the</strong> metropolis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>state his birth occurred, on February 18, 1853, his parents, James C. <strong>and</strong>Lncinda G. (Shumate) Thompson, residents <strong>of</strong> Atlanta, but natives <strong>of</strong> De KalbCounty, <strong>Georgia</strong>. Berryman Thompson received a collegiate education, beinga graduate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>, from which he received <strong>the</strong> degree<strong>of</strong> Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts. He became interested in law <strong>and</strong> gave twenty years <strong>of</strong>lus life to <strong>the</strong> study <strong>and</strong> practice <strong>of</strong> that pr<strong>of</strong>ession. He became a resident <strong>of</strong>Newnan. In 1877 he married Miss Susan J. Longino, <strong>the</strong> daughter <strong>of</strong> aCampbell County (<strong>Georgia</strong>) family. Two children were born to <strong>the</strong> Thompsons. Charles L., <strong>the</strong> only son, died at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> twenty-one. The onlydaughter, Lucile, is Mrs. Garl<strong>and</strong> M. Jones, to whom this sketch has frequently referred. Mr. Thompson's enterprise <strong>and</strong> ability have made noslight impression on <strong>the</strong> City <strong>of</strong> Xewnan <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> surrounding vicinity. liewas one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> orgnnixcrs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Newnan Banking Company, organized in1894, with a capital <strong>of</strong> $55,000, which has been increased by its earnings toits present capital <strong>of</strong> $125,000, its surplus <strong>and</strong> undivided pr<strong>of</strong>its now being$100,000. He was also one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> organizers <strong>and</strong> is <strong>the</strong> president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Mclntoah Cotton Mills, a company manufacturing cotton yams. This factoryemploys about 300 persons, giving support to approximately fourtimes that number. When organized, <strong>the</strong>se mills had a local capital <strong>of</strong>$187,000, in 1906, <strong>and</strong> since that time has invested about ^00,000. Mr.Thompson, is. moreover, engaged quite extensively in <strong>the</strong> production <strong>of</strong> cotton<strong>and</strong> corn. He is <strong>the</strong> owner <strong>of</strong> several fine farms <strong>and</strong> is, indeed, interestedin every productive phase <strong>of</strong> human endeavor. lie has <strong>the</strong> reputation <strong>of</strong>being a leader in all movements tending to <strong>the</strong> beat development <strong>of</strong> his city<strong>and</strong> county. He <strong>and</strong> his son-in-law are typical Sou<strong>the</strong>rn gentlemen with <strong>the</strong>twentieth century spirit, progressive, genial <strong>and</strong> generous.H. Goss, M. D. Dependent in his youth upon his own resourcesin making possible <strong>the</strong> realization <strong>of</strong> his high ambition to prepare himselffor <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ession which he has signally dignified <strong>and</strong> honored by his character <strong>and</strong> services, Dr. lslia,m Hamilton Goss is recognized as a man <strong>of</strong> specially fine pr<strong>of</strong>essional attainments <strong>and</strong> as one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> really distinguishedphysicians <strong>and</strong> surgeons <strong>of</strong> his native state, where lie is engaged in <strong>the</strong> activepractice <strong>of</strong> his pr<strong>of</strong>ession in <strong>the</strong> City <strong>of</strong> A<strong>the</strong>ns <strong>and</strong> controls a business whichin its scope <strong>and</strong> importance affords <strong>the</strong> best attestation <strong>of</strong> his skill in <strong>and</strong> hisassiduous devotion to <strong>the</strong> humane work <strong>of</strong> his chosen vocation.Doctor Goss was born in Banks County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, on <strong>the</strong> 28th <strong>of</strong> April, 1853,<strong>and</strong> is a son <strong>of</strong> Rev. William Rayburn Goss <strong>and</strong> Elizabeth Ann (Mitehell)Goss, <strong>the</strong> former <strong>of</strong> whom was born in Elbert County, this state, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>latter in Jackson County. The fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> doctor was nn able <strong>and</strong> honoredclergyman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Baptist. Church <strong>and</strong> labored with all consecrated zeal <strong>and</strong>devotion in his high calling until he was summoned to his reward, his deathhaving occurred in 1887, in Commerce, Jackson Comity, which had long beenhis place <strong>of</strong> residence. Ee was sixty-seven years <strong>of</strong> age at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> hisdemise <strong>and</strong> was a member <strong>of</strong> a family that has given in previous generationsmany earnest representatives to <strong>the</strong> Christian ministry in <strong>the</strong> State <strong>of</strong><strong>Georgia</strong>. His cherished <strong>and</strong> devoted wife, whose life was a veritable beat!-
