Eight years ago his only son, Frederick Wakefield Patterson,became a partner, <strong>and</strong> since <strong>the</strong> Arm lias hcen E. M. Patterson & Son.As undertakers <strong>and</strong> fnncral directors <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> E. M. Patterson & Sonlins long hccn a household word in Atlanta <strong>and</strong> all over <strong>the</strong> northwesternpart <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state. The senior member is now <strong>the</strong> oldest funeral director in <strong>the</strong>entire state from <strong>the</strong> st<strong>and</strong>point <strong>of</strong> length <strong>of</strong> service. There are few men inany line <strong>of</strong> occupation who have been continuously at work for forty-fouryears. His activities in Atlanta have continued uninterrupted for thirty-fouryears. In that time he has <strong>of</strong>ficiated at <strong>the</strong> burial <strong>of</strong> many <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>'s mostnoted people, including Alex<strong>and</strong>er E. Stephens on March 8, 1883, who diedwhile governor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>; Eon. Joseph E. Brown, who was <strong>Georgia</strong>'s famouswar governor; Alien D. C<strong>and</strong>ler, Joseph M. Terrell, Sam Jones, A. 0. Bacon<strong>and</strong> many o<strong>the</strong>rs.Ee has olso made himself a leader in all pr<strong>of</strong>essional organizations <strong>and</strong>activities. For nine years he was president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> Stale Board <strong>of</strong>Embalmers, serving four years under Governor Alien D. C<strong>and</strong>ler <strong>and</strong> fiveyears under Governor Joseph M. Terrcll. Ee is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> NationalFuneral Directors' Association <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United States <strong>and</strong> is now its secondvice president. For three different years he served as president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>State Funeral Directors' Association. Mr. Pattersou is a member <strong>and</strong> trustee<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> First Christian Church <strong>of</strong> Atlanta. Fraternally ho is identified with<strong>the</strong> Independent Order <strong>of</strong> Odd Fellows <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Improved Order <strong>of</strong> Red Men,<strong>and</strong> for <strong>the</strong> past twenty consecutive years has represented his Odd Fellowslodge, Capital Lodge No. 60, in <strong>the</strong> gr<strong>and</strong> lodge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state. Ee has been amember <strong>of</strong> that order since 1878, for thirty-seven years, <strong>and</strong> has been treasurer<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Atlanta lodge for <strong>the</strong> past fifteen years.On December 30, 1880, Mr. Patterson married Miss Clara Wakeficld, whowas born <strong>and</strong> reared in Birmingham, Engl<strong>and</strong>. They have two children.Frederick Vakefield Patterson is <strong>the</strong> son already mentioned; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> daughteris Claude Brumficld, now Mrs. Benjamin F. Xoble <strong>of</strong> Montgomery, Alabama.The judiciary <strong>of</strong> Efnngharn County containsno more honored or respected name than that <strong>of</strong> Hon. Albert BunyeanKieffer, whose .services in <strong>the</strong> capacity <strong>of</strong> ordinary, at Springfield, have been<strong>of</strong> a character to establish him firmly in <strong>the</strong> confidence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> people amongwhom his life has been passed. During a long <strong>and</strong> useful career he has beenengaged in a variety <strong>of</strong> pursuits, his energies having invaded <strong>the</strong> fields <strong>of</strong>education, merch<strong>and</strong>ising <strong>and</strong> finance, <strong>and</strong> his contributions to <strong>the</strong> welfare<strong>and</strong> advancement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> community have always been <strong>of</strong> a substantial <strong>and</strong>lasting nature.Jiidge Kieffer was born April 1, 1859, in Emngham County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, <strong>and</strong>is a son <strong>of</strong> Alien Newton <strong>and</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> Ann Rebecca (Dasher) Kicffer. Thefamily is well known in Efnngbam County, where <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r was born April21. 1829, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r in 1836, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y were married in 1856. Alien N.Kieffer passed his life as a farmer <strong>and</strong> planter, accumulated a satisfying property <strong>and</strong> died in November, ]911, <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r having passed away many yearsbefore, in April. 1863. They were <strong>the</strong> parents <strong>of</strong> two children: SamuelNapoleon <strong>and</strong> Albert Bunyesn.Albert B. Eieffcr derived his early education in <strong>the</strong> public schools <strong>of</strong>Springfield, which he attended for about five years, <strong>the</strong>n going to ScrevcnCounty <strong>and</strong> completing his studies. Ee entered upon his career as an educator <strong>and</strong> for some years was widely known as one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> popular <strong>and</strong> efficientteachers <strong>of</strong> EfSngham <strong>and</strong> Screven counties, but subsequently removed to
