GEORGIA AND GEORGIANSHe lias done much to direct <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Baptist work among <strong>the</strong> negroes<strong>and</strong> has been a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> committee directing educational work in <strong>the</strong>Sou<strong>the</strong>rn mountain regions, <strong>and</strong> has written much from his experiences among<strong>the</strong>se people. In 1916 lie became pastor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> First Baptist Church <strong>of</strong> Audcrson,South. Carolina. Doctor White is author <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> "Silent Sou<strong>the</strong>rners/'1906; "My Old Confederates," 1908: "Prohibition, <strong>the</strong> New Task <strong>and</strong> Opportunity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> South," 1908: joint author in "The Man that Rum Made,"1912; <strong>and</strong> author <strong>of</strong> "Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Highl<strong>and</strong>ers," 1913. Doctor 'White wasuniversity preacher <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Chicago in 1914, 1915 <strong>and</strong> 1916. lieis a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kappa Alpha fraternity. On October 12, 1892, he marriedMiss Erne I. Guess <strong>of</strong> Gary. North Carolina. They are <strong>the</strong> parents <strong>of</strong> threechildren, two sons <strong>and</strong> a daughter.WILLAHD EARL QUIIXIAN, M. D. A thorough knowledge <strong>of</strong> all that pertains to <strong>the</strong> prevention <strong>of</strong> disease <strong>and</strong> preservation <strong>of</strong> health has broughtpublic recognition <strong>and</strong> private esteem <strong>and</strong> consideration to Dr. Willard EarlQullian. who is president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Atlanta Board <strong>of</strong> Health <strong>and</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essionallyidentified with leading medical institutions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> South.He is <strong>of</strong> notable pr<strong>of</strong>essional ancestry <strong>and</strong> bears a name that has beensignally honored for generations in <strong>Georgia</strong>. Willard Earl Quillian was bornat Carrollton, Carroll County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, September 30, 18T6, <strong>the</strong> eldest son. <strong>of</strong>his parents, who were Rev. William Fletcher <strong>and</strong> Lucy (Vail) Quilliau.An extended sketch, <strong>of</strong> his late fa<strong>the</strong>r will he found elsewhere in this publication.The son <strong>of</strong> a Methodist minister, Doctor Quillian altended school in <strong>the</strong>various places where his fa<strong>the</strong>r performed his ministerial labors, being successively a student at Dalton, Rome, LaGrange <strong>and</strong> Augusta. At <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong>sixteen he graduated from Richmond Academy at Augusta, <strong>and</strong> was thus wellprepared to enter Emory College, from which institution he was graduatedat <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> twenty with <strong>the</strong> degree A. B. He stood fourth in a class <strong>of</strong>thirty-seven members. His year <strong>of</strong> graduation was 1897.In <strong>the</strong> meantime having chosen medicine as a career, he had directed hisprivate studies toward that end, <strong>and</strong> in 1897-98 <strong>and</strong> 1898-99 took his first <strong>and</strong>second courses <strong>of</strong> medical lectures in <strong>the</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Physicians <strong>and</strong> Surgeonsat St. Louis, Missouri. His third year course was taken in <strong>the</strong> Atlanta College<strong>of</strong> Physicians <strong>and</strong> Surgeons, in 1899 <strong>and</strong> 1900. in April <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> last namedyear he graduated <strong>and</strong> received his medical degree. It. is indicative <strong>of</strong> hisdetermination to become thoroughly qualified for his important pr<strong>of</strong>essionthat he at once entered upon post-graduate work in Johns Hopkins MedicalCollege Hospital at Baltimore, where he spent <strong>the</strong> summer <strong>of</strong> 1900.Doctor Quillian <strong>the</strong>n accepted a position as interne in St. Joseph's Hospitalat Savannah, <strong>Georgia</strong>, where he spent two years. During that lime at intervalshe was also Acting Assistant Surgeon in <strong>the</strong> United States Public Health <strong>and</strong>Marine Hospital service. In <strong>the</strong> fall <strong>of</strong> 1902 he was employed in specialpost-graduate work in different hospitals in <strong>the</strong> City <strong>of</strong> New York, welcominghis opportunities in <strong>the</strong>se clinics <strong>and</strong> performing very creditable work in <strong>the</strong>New York Lying-in Hospital. Doctor Quillian gives special attention tosurgery, diseases <strong>of</strong> women, <strong>and</strong> obstetrics, finding' in <strong>the</strong>se fields a greatneed for his training <strong>and</strong> scientific attainments.In 1903 Doctor Quilliau came to Atlanta <strong>and</strong> has built up a very large<strong>and</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>itable practice. He has been <strong>and</strong> still is connected with many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>city's medical institutions <strong>and</strong> scientific bodies. For eight years he was amember <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> faculty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Atlanta School <strong>of</strong> Medicine, from <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong>its organization until 1914, when it was merged with <strong>the</strong> Atlanta, College <strong>of</strong>Physicians <strong>and</strong> Surgeons, <strong>the</strong> two uniting to form <strong>the</strong> present Atlanta Medical College. Since <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> its organisation he has been on <strong>the</strong> medicalstaff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Wesley Memorial Hospital <strong>of</strong> Atlanta <strong>and</strong> was also identified
