GEOEGIA AND GEORGIANS 3263-Henry W. <strong>and</strong> Jane (Adams) Dean. The Dean ancestry goes back toEngl<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> some time before <strong>the</strong> Revolutionary war, two bro<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>name, Charles <strong>and</strong> John, emigrated about 1770 <strong>and</strong> found homes in <strong>the</strong>colonies. Mr. Dean's gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r was Dr. Alvin Dean, a physician by pr<strong>of</strong>ession, but engaged chiefly as a large <strong>and</strong> prosperous planter. It is said tha<strong>the</strong> ga<strong>the</strong>red fifty-seven crops from his plantation in Chattooga County, <strong>and</strong>in working his plantation employed some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cherokee Indians before thattribe was removed from <strong>Georgia</strong>. Doctor Dean <strong>and</strong> his wife, Julia AnnThompson, had a married life <strong>of</strong> more than sixty years, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y died inFloyd County when about eighty years <strong>of</strong> age. She was a daughter <strong>of</strong> ElijahC. Adams Thompson.Henry W. Dean, fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Rome lawyer, before <strong>the</strong> war was a planter<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> owner <strong>of</strong> many slaves. During <strong>the</strong> war he served as first lieutenantin a <strong>Georgia</strong> regiment <strong>and</strong> was taken prisoner at <strong>the</strong> fall <strong>of</strong> Vicksburg, <strong>and</strong>after parole joined Joe Wheeler's Cavalry <strong>and</strong> served with <strong>the</strong> rank <strong>of</strong>captain until <strong>the</strong> close <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> war. He returned to find his property largelydissipated, but took up <strong>the</strong> struggle with courage <strong>and</strong> determination, arid intime rebuilt his resources <strong>and</strong> was an active planter until his death in 1896at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> sixty-four. His first wife died in November, 1873, at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong>thirty-eight, <strong>and</strong> he afterwards married Mrs. Anna B. Fleming, daughter <strong>of</strong>Simpson B. Fleming <strong>of</strong> Spartansburg, South Carolina. Linton A. Dean was<strong>the</strong> oldest <strong>of</strong> his fa<strong>the</strong>r's six children. His sister Mary Emma married RobertH. Towers, both <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m now deceased, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir two living children areDoriigan Dean <strong>and</strong> Mary Dean Towers. Julia Frances Dean became <strong>the</strong>wife <strong>of</strong> George A. Shuford, <strong>the</strong>y reside at Asheville, North Carolina, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>irtwo children are George A., Jr., <strong>and</strong> Mary Frances. Henry Alden Dean iswell known as a manufacturer <strong>of</strong> agricultural implements at Rome, <strong>and</strong> byhis marriage to Stella Corput has one child, Martha C. Frank Stark, alsoengaged in <strong>the</strong> manufacture <strong>of</strong> agricultural implements at Atlanta, marriedMabel Lewis, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir four children are Frank Stark, Lewis A., Henry W.<strong>and</strong> Mary Dean. Joseph Edward Dean, <strong>the</strong> junior partner <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> firm <strong>of</strong>Dean & Dean, lawyers, was graduated from a state law college in 1893 <strong>and</strong> hassince been in practice with his older bro<strong>the</strong>r. His first wife was NellieSimpson, daughter <strong>of</strong> Capt, W. P. Simpson <strong>of</strong> Rome, <strong>and</strong> she left one son,Simpson Dean; his second marriage was to Miss Lillian Harmum <strong>of</strong> Marysville.Tennessee, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> four children <strong>of</strong> that marriage are Joel Edward.Charlotte, Margaret <strong>and</strong> an infant child yet unnamed.Linton Adams Dean grew up on <strong>the</strong> old homestead in Chattooga County,with part <strong>of</strong> his youth vexed by <strong>the</strong> turmoil <strong>of</strong> war, in spite <strong>of</strong> which he wasliberally educated, <strong>and</strong> in 1875 graduated A. B. from Mercer University,<strong>and</strong> in 1876 took his degree in law at <strong>the</strong> Columbian University at Washington, D. C. Returning to Rome, he took up active practice, <strong>and</strong> had severalpartners until 1894, since which date, for twenty-one years, his associatehas been his bro<strong>the</strong>r Joseph.Mr. Dean is a democrat, who has done much yeoman service for his party,<strong>and</strong> in 1886 was honored by election to <strong>the</strong> state senate. In 1907 he againrepresented his home district in <strong>the</strong> Legislature, <strong>and</strong> in that session his abilityas a lawyer <strong>and</strong> his tactful leadership impressed <strong>the</strong>mselves upon muchimportant legislation. He was particularly influential in <strong>the</strong> legislation providing for <strong>the</strong> present convict lease system in <strong>Georgia</strong>, for <strong>the</strong> state railroadcommission, in <strong>the</strong> preparation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state-wide prohibition bill, <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rlaws that date from that session. For <strong>the</strong> past twenty-five years Mr. Dean hasbeen a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> board <strong>of</strong> trustees <strong>of</strong> Shorter Female College. Fraternally he is identified with <strong>the</strong> Masonic order. In <strong>the</strong> First Baptist Church<strong>of</strong> Rome he is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> leading members <strong>and</strong> has served as superintendent<strong>of</strong> its Sunday school.On October 29, 1878, at Rome, Mr. Dean married Miss Agnes S.
