F. Daley.After his fa<strong>the</strong>r's death, Mr. Bussey removed to Asbburn, in <strong>the</strong> newCounty <strong>of</strong> Turner, where he has since continued <strong>the</strong> practice <strong>of</strong> his pr<strong>of</strong>ession.His devotion to his clients' cause, <strong>and</strong> his st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional conduct,during an active career, illustrate <strong>the</strong> best traditions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> law.While never an <strong>of</strong>fice seeker, Mr. Bussey is a strong supporter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>democratic party, always active in its councils, frequently being a delegate toits conventions, <strong>and</strong> serving at this time as a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State Executivecommittee, aud as nominee for alternate presidential elector from <strong>the</strong> thirdcongressional district.He is always active in educational <strong>and</strong> civic advancement; <strong>and</strong> uponappointment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gr<strong>and</strong> jury, served several years, during his Wrightsvillcresidence, as chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Johnson County Board <strong>of</strong> Education, <strong>and</strong> isnow serving in <strong>the</strong> same capacity in Turner County.A member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Methodist Episcopal Church, South, he was at one timesecretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> South <strong>Georgia</strong> Epworth League. He is also a Mason, affiliatedwith <strong>the</strong> Lodge, Chapter <strong>and</strong> Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Order; <strong>and</strong> is also a past chancellor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Knights <strong>of</strong> Pythias.Mr. Busscy was happily married, on October 25, 1911, to Miss Nena. Thorne.daughter <strong>of</strong> Samuel T. <strong>and</strong> Mary Whitmcll (Ilarriss) Thorne, <strong>of</strong> Littleton,Warren County, North Carolina. One son, Arthur S., Jr., was born to thornNovember 15, 1914. Mrs. Bussey was educated at Littloton Female College,<strong>and</strong> at R<strong>and</strong>olph-Macon Woman's College, Lynchhurg, Virginia. The Thornefamily <strong>and</strong> its connections are among <strong>the</strong> most prominent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old NorthState.JT7DGE JOlfX WTLLl.Ut HEXDERSON UNDERWOOD, 011C <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> DlOStnotable characters <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> in <strong>the</strong> last generation, was born at Elbcrton,November 20, 1816, <strong>and</strong> died in Rome on July 18, 1888. His gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r migrated from Engl<strong>and</strong> to Virginia about 1750 <strong>and</strong> his fa<strong>the</strong>r was anoted lawyer, under whom his own legal studies were guided. He beganpractice as a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bar <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> Western Circuit, <strong>of</strong> whichhe was elected solicitor general in 1843. He resigned before <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> histerm <strong>and</strong> in 1851 moved to Rome, where <strong>the</strong> remainder <strong>of</strong> his life was spent.Tn 1856 he was elected a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Assembly <strong>and</strong> served asSpeaker <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> House. He was sent to Congress in 1859 <strong>and</strong> was a member<strong>of</strong> that body when <strong>Georgia</strong> seceded from <strong>the</strong> Union. At <strong>the</strong> outbreak <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>war he declined <strong>the</strong> colonelcy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Twenty-ninth <strong>Georgia</strong> Regiment, but didserve as inspector <strong>of</strong> brigades <strong>and</strong> assistant postmaster general <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Confederacy.At <strong>the</strong> close <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> war he resumed practice at Rome until 1867, servingas judge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tallapoosa <strong>and</strong> Rome circuits from that year until 1882.Judge Underwood <strong>the</strong>n resigned to accept a position on <strong>the</strong> United States TariffCommission tendered him by President Arthur. After his wise <strong>and</strong> laboriousservice in that connection, he returned to private practice at Rome, whichhe continued until his sudden death in 1888.a leading lawyer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state<strong>and</strong> former judge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Superior Court, was bom September 11, 1857,a son <strong>of</strong> James A. <strong>and</strong> Hester Ann (Tate) Maddox. His mo<strong>the</strong>r was anative <strong>of</strong> Pickets County <strong>and</strong> his fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> Hall County, <strong>Georgia</strong>. The gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r, C. E. Maddox, was born in North Carolina, hut settled in <strong>Georgia</strong> earlyin <strong>the</strong> last century, <strong>and</strong> was a planter <strong>and</strong> slave owner.
