3254 GEORGIA AND GEORGIANSHis first wife, <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> Dr. Joseph A., died <strong>of</strong> typhoid fever in 1864,her death occurring just two hours a/tor his return home from <strong>the</strong> army.While he was absent as a soldier three <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir four children had also died.On January 1, 1868, he married Miss Janie Chisholm, who died in <strong>the</strong> sameyear ;it <strong>the</strong> birth <strong>of</strong> her daughter Jaiiie, who is now <strong>the</strong> wife <strong>of</strong> W. W. Turner,a successful jeweler in Cedartown. Dr. Moses Liddcll was always closelyidentified with <strong>the</strong> democratic party in politics, though never willing to acceptany oitice. Before <strong>the</strong> war he was one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> strong democrats who contested<strong>the</strong> political honors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state against <strong>the</strong> whig party. He was also a member<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Masonic fraternity, <strong>and</strong> active as a Presbyterian <strong>and</strong> engaged in manymovements for educational <strong>and</strong> general social welfare in his home community.Joseph A. Liddell was educated in <strong>the</strong> public schools at Gedartown, <strong>and</strong> in1S7G graduated from <strong>the</strong> medical department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>,which w»s also his fa<strong>the</strong>r's alma mater, iu <strong>the</strong> same year <strong>of</strong> his graduationhe opened his <strong>of</strong>Oce <strong>and</strong> began practice in Cedartown, <strong>and</strong> had become wellestablished in experience <strong>and</strong> in <strong>the</strong> confidence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> community before hisfa<strong>the</strong>r passed from <strong>the</strong> scene <strong>of</strong> action. Doctor Ir.idell is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Polk County <strong>and</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> State Medical societies <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> American MedicalAssociation, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> medical journals from time to time have publishedvaluable reports <strong>of</strong> his experience <strong>and</strong> observation in connection with particular oases.Doctor Liddell is a democrat, is an active Mason <strong>and</strong> a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Yaryan Temple <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mystic Shrine at Atlanta, affiliated with <strong>the</strong> Benevolent<strong>and</strong> Protective Order <strong>of</strong> Elks, <strong>and</strong> belongs to <strong>the</strong> Presbyterian Church. AtCedartown, on October 27, 1878, he married Miss Mary Lulu Walthall, daughter <strong>of</strong> Leonard H. <strong>and</strong> Susan (TSnchanan) Walthall. Her parents were among<strong>the</strong> earliest settlers <strong>of</strong> Polk County, <strong>and</strong> farmers <strong>and</strong> planters by vocation.Mr. Walthall served in <strong>the</strong> State Legislature several times, <strong>and</strong> died in 1877at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> sixty-eight. His wife passed away at <strong>the</strong> same age in 1881. To<strong>the</strong> marriage <strong>of</strong> Doctor <strong>and</strong> Mrs. Liddell were born three children : Frank M.Liddell, born July 25, 1885. <strong>and</strong> now in <strong>the</strong> electrical business at ColoradoSprings, Colorado; Joseph A., Jr., born September 16, 1890, associated withhis bro<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>the</strong> electrical business at Colorado Springs ; <strong>and</strong> Miss Lucy A.,born May 23, 1895, <strong>and</strong> at home with her parents. All <strong>the</strong>se children wereborn in Cedartown. Doctor Liddell owns a large amount <strong>of</strong> l<strong>and</strong> both farming<strong>and</strong> 'timber property in Polk County, <strong>and</strong> both as a matter <strong>of</strong> recreation fromhis pr<strong>of</strong>essional work <strong>and</strong> on a solid commercial basis he is engaged in. stockfarming, specializing in high grade horses, mules, hogs <strong>and</strong> cattle.T, M. Among <strong>the</strong> skilled <strong>and</strong> learned pr<strong>of</strong>essional men <strong>of</strong> Worth County who have hearkened to <strong>the</strong> call <strong>of</strong> public life,one who is well known to <strong>the</strong> people <strong>of</strong> this locality is Dr. Walter KennethStewart, <strong>of</strong> Sylvester. Tn his pr<strong>of</strong>essional capacity as a practitioner <strong>of</strong> medicine, Doctor Stewart won well-merited success, <strong>and</strong> at <strong>the</strong> same time thoroughlyestablished himself in public confidence as a man
