EC is amember <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Patriotic Sons <strong>of</strong> America, <strong>and</strong> is also a Mason.In 1862 he married Miss Lucy Pope Barrow, a native <strong>of</strong> Oglcthorpe County<strong>and</strong> a daughter <strong>of</strong> David C. <strong>and</strong> Sarah (Pope) Barrow. Mrs. Cobh diedat A<strong>the</strong>ns in 1880. The was an active member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Methodist Church<strong>and</strong> a woman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> highest culture, <strong>and</strong> prominently connected in familyrelationship. Of her six children <strong>the</strong> two now living "are: Miss Sarah PopeCobb, principal oif <strong>the</strong> Furlcw School at Amerieus; <strong>and</strong> Lucy Middieton,who in 1911 married Xathanial B. Stewart, who for a nuraber'<strong>of</strong> years liasbeen connected with <strong>the</strong> United States consular service.In 1881 Judge Cobb married Miss Martha Laraar Bivius, who was born inHouston Comity, <strong>Georgia</strong>, daughter <strong>of</strong> George Ward <strong>and</strong> Elizabeth Caldwell(Calhoun) Bivius. Mrs. Cobb is closely related to <strong>the</strong> family <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> greatSouth Carolina statesman, John C. Calhoun. By this marriage, <strong>the</strong>re werealso six children, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> three living are: George Calhoun Cobb, who hasmade for himself a name as an artist in New York City;_ Elizabeth Craig Cobb,proprietor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cobb School <strong>of</strong> Music, at Americus; <strong>and</strong> Martha. LamarBivins Cobb, teacher <strong>of</strong> primary <strong>and</strong> domestic science in <strong>the</strong> Girls Home Schoolat Amerieus.Judge Cobb has taken an active interest in national <strong>and</strong> state politics, buthis main ambition has been in promoting <strong>the</strong>, agricultural <strong>and</strong> educationalinterests <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state in which he has rendered prominent <strong>and</strong> valuable services.He is <strong>of</strong> cheerful disposition <strong>and</strong> always brings happiness <strong>and</strong> pleasure to allwith whom he, is associated. Now in his seventy-ninth year, he is noted for hisvitality <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> efficient service he renders in everything with which he isconnected, having just completed a ten days service at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> State Fair,which was held under <strong>the</strong> auspices <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> State Agricultural Society<strong>of</strong> which he is <strong>the</strong> president <strong>and</strong> which was considered <strong>the</strong> finest <strong>and</strong> mostsuccessful agricultural fair ever held in <strong>Georgia</strong>.It can be truthfully said <strong>of</strong> him in his long <strong>and</strong> varied life, he has hadprosperity <strong>and</strong> adversity. <strong>the</strong> changes <strong>of</strong> fortune have never changed hisgenial, happy disposition. The needy have never been turned from his doors;he never bears malice against those who have tried to do him an injury, <strong>and</strong>he has never deserted a friend. He is firm <strong>and</strong> decided in his opinions <strong>and</strong>expresses <strong>the</strong>m boldly, particularly as to <strong>the</strong> respect for <strong>and</strong> enforcement <strong>of</strong>law.JOSEPH ANDREW LIDDELL, M. D. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> oldest practitioners in medicine <strong>and</strong> surgery in Polk County is Dr. Joseph A. Liddell, whose pr<strong>of</strong>essionalcareer covers nearly forty years. His fa<strong>the</strong>r before him was a distinguishedmember <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>and</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> uncles <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r relativeswere identified with this high <strong>and</strong> noble calling. Doctor Liddell has his homeat Cedartown, <strong>and</strong> for a number <strong>of</strong> years has combined with his pr<strong>of</strong>ession<strong>the</strong> management <strong>of</strong> a large <strong>and</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>itable slock farm.Joseph Andrew Liddell was born in Polk County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, January 1,1855, a son <strong>of</strong> Dr. Moses Franklin <strong>and</strong> Lucy (Harris) Liddell. His mo<strong>the</strong>rwas a daughter <strong>of</strong> William Tyler <strong>and</strong> Martha Parson Harris. Moses F.Liddell was born in Gwinnett County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, <strong>and</strong> was one <strong>of</strong> five sons, all<strong>of</strong> whom were graduates in medicine <strong>and</strong> followed <strong>the</strong>ir pr<strong>of</strong>ession in <strong>the</strong>irnative state. Moses F. Liddell was born in 1818 <strong>and</strong> died in 1889 in Cedartown,where for over forty years he had practiced medicine. His practiceas a physician was interrupted by <strong>the</strong> outbreak <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> war between <strong>the</strong> States,<strong>and</strong> he became a surgeon in Cobb's Legion <strong>and</strong> later comm<strong>and</strong>ed a companyas captain, serving in -<strong>the</strong> campaign from Deeatur to Atlanta. He had begunhis pr<strong>of</strong>essional career in Deeatur, but it was in <strong>the</strong> community in <strong>and</strong> aboutCedartown that he remained for more than four decades <strong>and</strong> permanentlyestablished his name in <strong>the</strong> kindly affection <strong>and</strong> memory <strong>of</strong> local citizens.
