3236 GEORGIA AND GEORGIANSDr. R. G. Stone was born at Linton, Washington County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, <strong>and</strong><strong>the</strong>re spent <strong>the</strong> seventy-two years <strong>of</strong> his life. He received his early educationin <strong>the</strong> public schools, <strong>and</strong> in young manhood enlisted in <strong>the</strong> Eighteenth Regiment, <strong>Georgia</strong> Volunteer Infantry, as a private <strong>of</strong> Company K, for service in<strong>the</strong> war between <strong>the</strong> South <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> North. With an excellent record hereturned to <strong>the</strong> pursuits <strong>of</strong> civil life, resuming his medical studies <strong>and</strong> beingeventually graduated from Charleston Medical College. From that time untilhis death he continued to be engaged in <strong>the</strong> practice <strong>of</strong> medicine <strong>and</strong> surgeryat Linton, winning an excellent reputation, gaining a high position, <strong>and</strong> enjoying <strong>the</strong> emoluments which go with such prestige. He married Miss BuenaVista Malpas, who still survives him at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> sixty-five years, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ybecame <strong>the</strong> parents <strong>of</strong> five children, as follows: Addie Stone, deceased, whowas <strong>the</strong> wife <strong>of</strong> A. M. Duggan <strong>of</strong> Hancock County, <strong>Georgia</strong>; Mrs. Mary GlennSwint, <strong>the</strong> wife <strong>of</strong> a physician <strong>of</strong> Milledgeville; John Julian; Dr. RobertGlenn, who is associated with his bro<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>the</strong> practice <strong>of</strong> medicine atHawkinsville; <strong>and</strong> Miss Ruth, whose home is at Milledgeville.As a boy John Julian Stone attended <strong>the</strong> public schools at Linton. Heearly showed in which direction his inclinations ran as to a life vocation, <strong>and</strong>after taking <strong>the</strong> junior course at Mercer University entered upon his medicalstudies under <strong>the</strong> preceptorship <strong>of</strong> his fa<strong>the</strong>r. Subsequently he became astudent in <strong>the</strong> medical department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>, at Augusta,<strong>and</strong> was duly graduated in <strong>the</strong> class <strong>of</strong> 1898, with <strong>the</strong> degree <strong>of</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong>Medicine. Doctor Stone began practice at Milledgeville in 1900 <strong>and</strong> remainedat that point until 1903, at which time he took up his residence <strong>and</strong> opened an<strong>of</strong>fice at Hawkinsville. In this thriving community lie has since built up alarge <strong>and</strong> important pr<strong>of</strong>essional business, his clientele including <strong>the</strong> representative families <strong>of</strong> this section. At <strong>the</strong> present, time he is serving as county,physician <strong>of</strong> Pulaski County. He keeps fully abreast <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> advancementbeing made in <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ession, <strong>and</strong> holds membership in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> MedicalSociety, <strong>the</strong> Ocmulgee Medical Society <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Medical Society,while his fraternal connection is with <strong>the</strong> Red Men. He is a democrat, but nota politician. With his family, he belongs to <strong>the</strong> Baptist Church. Personally,he is a genial <strong>and</strong> approachable gentleman, sympa<strong>the</strong>tic in nature <strong>and</strong> disposed to look upon <strong>the</strong> humanitarian as well as <strong>the</strong> scientific side <strong>of</strong> hispr<strong>of</strong>ession.On June 11, 1911, Doctor Stone was married at Hawkinsville to MissHazel Coleman, daughter <strong>of</strong> John <strong>and</strong> Mary (Wilcox) Colernan, <strong>and</strong> a descendant <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> early <strong>Georgia</strong> settler, her maternal gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r, in whose honorWilcox County was named. Doctor <strong>and</strong> Mrs. Stone have one child: JohnJulian, Jr., who was born at Hawkinsville, in 1912.CHARLES BOYD, M. D. A physician <strong>and</strong> surgeon <strong>of</strong> almost forty years'experience, Dr. Charles Boyd <strong>of</strong> Macon is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ablest representatives <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> medical pr<strong>of</strong>ession in <strong>Georgia</strong>. He has practiced in many different localities both in his native state <strong>and</strong> elsewhere, <strong>and</strong> was appointed United Statesarmy surgeon June 29, 1898.In recent years Dr. Charles Boyd has discovered a specific cure for treatment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> alarming disease <strong>of</strong> pellagra.In <strong>the</strong> City <strong>of</strong> Fitzgerald Doctor Boyd has treated successfully a largenumber <strong>of</strong> cases, many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m showing <strong>the</strong> most virulent forms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> disease,<strong>and</strong> his success has been such as to constitute him a notable authority on thisquestion. One special evidence <strong>of</strong> his st<strong>and</strong>ing among medical men came in1914 when he appeared before <strong>the</strong> United States Board <strong>of</strong> Health at Washington, District <strong>of</strong> Columbia, <strong>and</strong> explained <strong>the</strong> efficacy <strong>of</strong> his formula in such aconclusive manner as to win many commendations from <strong>the</strong> eminent authorities before whom he appeared.
