GEORGIA AND GEORGIANS 3223was born in Johnson County. He settled on a farm, <strong>and</strong> when <strong>the</strong> warcame on he joined <strong>the</strong> Confederate army <strong>and</strong> at a later time became activelyinterested in Iqcal politics. At one time he was identified with <strong>the</strong> populistcause, but finally returned to <strong>the</strong>* democratic party. He <strong>and</strong> his wife wereboth active in <strong>the</strong> Baptist Church, <strong>and</strong> reared a large family to honor <strong>and</strong>practice <strong>the</strong> Christian, virtues. Zacharias, Jr., died January 21, 1914, at <strong>the</strong>age <strong>of</strong> seventy-nine, while his wife passed away in 1907 at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> sixtyfive.A brief mention <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir children, all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m honored <strong>and</strong> respectedin <strong>the</strong>ir different conmiunities is as follows: Charles Claxton, who is aprominent lumber man in Mississippi; Mozell, who first married Dr. ManningAnderson <strong>of</strong> Bartow, <strong>Georgia</strong>, <strong>and</strong> is now <strong>the</strong> widow <strong>of</strong> R. A. Powell <strong>of</strong> Johnson County; Molly is <strong>the</strong> wife <strong>of</strong> Joseph Atkins <strong>of</strong> Soperton, <strong>Georgia</strong>; Charlesis a resident <strong>of</strong> Mississippi; Bennett is a farmer at Kite, <strong>Georgia</strong>; Lorenzo;Susan is <strong>the</strong> wife <strong>of</strong> if. A. Garrett <strong>of</strong> Alamo, <strong>Georgia</strong>; Tarchy is <strong>the</strong> wife <strong>of</strong>Robert Waller <strong>of</strong> Emanuel County <strong>and</strong> state representative from that district;Ocilla is <strong>the</strong> wife <strong>of</strong> E. D. Smith <strong>of</strong> Soperton.Sixth in order <strong>of</strong> age among <strong>the</strong>se children is Lorenzo Claxton, who wasborn in Johnson County in 1861, had a common school education, <strong>and</strong> throughall his active career has dftvoted his energies to farming. He has stood highin local politics in Johnson County, served two terms or eight years in <strong>the</strong><strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> 'county treasurer, <strong>and</strong> is still one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most prosperous farmer citizens in that county. He is a deacon in <strong>the</strong> Baptist Church <strong>and</strong> is affiliatedwith <strong>the</strong> Masonic order. He married Miss Isabelle Alien, who was born inJohnson County <strong>of</strong> an old family <strong>the</strong>re. They became <strong>the</strong> parents <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>sechildren: Rev. James L. Claxton is a Baptist minister at Quitman, <strong>Georgia</strong>;<strong>the</strong> next in age is Dr. Edward B.; Minnie, wife <strong>of</strong> G. W. Crawford <strong>of</strong> S<strong>and</strong>ersville,died in May,. 1910, at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> twenty-six; Manning Zack is a druggist at Dublin; Leslie E. is a bookkeeper in Dublin; E<strong>the</strong>l is <strong>the</strong> wife <strong>of</strong> ErnestPrice <strong>of</strong> Harrison, <strong>Georgia</strong>; <strong>and</strong> Arlie, Nolie <strong>and</strong> Nellie Mary are youngerchildren <strong>and</strong> still being educated.While Edward Burton Claxton spent much <strong>of</strong> his youth in <strong>the</strong> rural districts <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>, he early aspired to a broad sphere <strong>of</strong> usefulness <strong>and</strong> directedhis energies to getting a substantial <strong>and</strong> liberal education. He attended <strong>the</strong>public schools in Johnson County, <strong>the</strong> high school at Wrightsville, <strong>and</strong> afterone year in <strong>the</strong> medical department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> at Augustaentered <strong>the</strong> Maryl<strong>and</strong> Medical College <strong>of</strong> Baltimore, where he was graduatedM. D. in 1905. Following that came six months as an interne at <strong>the</strong> FranklinSquare Hospital <strong>of</strong> Baltimore, <strong>and</strong> he <strong>the</strong>n" returned to <strong>Georgia</strong> to beginprivate practice at Kite in Johnson County. Three years later, in 1909, hereturned to Baltimore <strong>and</strong> pursued graduate studies in Johns Hopkins University, after which he again resumed his work in Kite. In 1912 DoctorClaxton came to Dublin, <strong>and</strong> at <strong>the</strong> present time has unquestioned rank with<strong>the</strong> best physicians <strong>and</strong> surgeons <strong>of</strong> that section <strong>of</strong> Central <strong>Georgia</strong>. In 1914he again interrupted his private practice to take three months <strong>of</strong> post-graduatetraining in <strong>the</strong> New York City Medical School Hospital.In 1914 he served as president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> County Medical Society, has beenvice president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> District Medical Society, <strong>and</strong> is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> StateMedical Society <strong>and</strong> American Medical Association. He has been countyphysician since 1914, is a director <strong>and</strong> charter member <strong>of</strong> Dublin Sanitarium,<strong>and</strong> is a director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Exchange Bank. Fraternally he is a Knight<strong>of</strong> Pythias <strong>and</strong> Odd Fellow, a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Blue Lodge <strong>of</strong> Masons at Dublin,<strong>and</strong> a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> First Baptist Church at Dublin.On December 27, 1905, Doctor Claxton was married at Baltimore, Maryl<strong>and</strong>, to Miss Irene Robertson <strong>of</strong> Baltimore, daughter <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor J. L. Robertson.Mrs. Claxton has four bro<strong>the</strong>rs: R. .Wert Robertson, <strong>of</strong> Salisbury,Maryl<strong>and</strong>; two dentists, Drs. H. C. Robertson <strong>and</strong> L. J. Robertson <strong>of</strong> Baltimore, <strong>and</strong> L. M. Robertson <strong>of</strong> Baltimore; also two sisters, Mrs. George North
