He is unmarried.J. G. FUSSEL, M. D. His present position as a leader in <strong>the</strong> medical pr<strong>of</strong>ession at Fitzgerald, Doctor Fussel has won on his merit. He has been inactive practice for more than twenty years, <strong>and</strong> has-combined natural qualifications with conscientious care <strong>and</strong> unflagging industry in behalf <strong>of</strong> hispr<strong>of</strong>essional work.He was born in Telfair County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, October 12, 1867, a son <strong>of</strong> T. 0.<strong>and</strong> Sarah Jane (Fletcher) Fussel. His fa<strong>the</strong>r was born in North Carolina(January 4, 1830, <strong>and</strong> served during <strong>the</strong> war in <strong>the</strong> Confederate army, comingout without wounds. As a young man he settled in Telfair County, <strong>Georgia</strong>,<strong>and</strong> married a native <strong>of</strong> that county. He spent about forty years as a merchant <strong>and</strong> farmer, <strong>and</strong> died April 23, 1906. His widow is still living atCordele at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> eighty-four. Their living children are: T. F. Fussel<strong>of</strong> Telfair County; J. W. Fussel <strong>of</strong> Atlanta; B. 0. Fussel <strong>of</strong> Atlanta; DoctorFussel; <strong>and</strong> C. W. Fussel <strong>of</strong> Atlanta.Doctor Fussel as a boy attended <strong>the</strong> country schools <strong>of</strong> Telfair County <strong>and</strong>largely through his own efforts acquired <strong>the</strong> money needed to advance him to<strong>the</strong> rank <strong>of</strong> a pr<strong>of</strong>essional man. He attended <strong>the</strong> medical department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>State University at Augusta, where he was graduated M. D. in 1894. He isalso a graduate pharmacist, having obtained his degree in that pr<strong>of</strong>ession in1906. His first three years <strong>of</strong> practice were spent in Seville, <strong>Georgia</strong>, <strong>and</strong>since 1906 has been in active practice at Fitzgerald.Doctor Fussel is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> County <strong>and</strong> State <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Eleventh District Medical societies <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> American Medical Association. He is a KnightTemplar Mason <strong>and</strong> Shriner, a democrat, <strong>and</strong> a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> MethodistEpiscopal Church.In May, 1890, at Abbeville, Geogia, he married Miss Lelia Little, daughter<strong>of</strong> J. H. Little <strong>of</strong> Abbeville. To <strong>the</strong>ir union have been born five children:George E., born at Abbeville in'1893 <strong>and</strong> now attending a dental college;Joseph F., born at Seville in 1895 <strong>and</strong> a practical young farmer; E<strong>the</strong>lyn,born at Fitzgerald in 1897 <strong>and</strong> now attending <strong>the</strong> State Normal at A<strong>the</strong>ns,<strong>Georgia</strong>; Edward G., born in 1901 at Fitzgerald; <strong>and</strong> Fletcher L., born in1903.COL. W. A. CHARTERS. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>'s best known lawyers is ColonelCharters <strong>of</strong> Gainesville. His studious disposition <strong>and</strong> ambition led him to takeup <strong>the</strong> law early in life, <strong>and</strong> he came to <strong>Georgia</strong> <strong>and</strong> was admitted to <strong>the</strong> barbefore reaching his legal majority. His career <strong>of</strong> more than thirty years hasbrought him <strong>the</strong> successes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> true lawyer, numerous social <strong>and</strong> civic honors<strong>and</strong> a great host <strong>of</strong> friends <strong>and</strong> acquaintances in all parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state.W. A. Charters was born in Richmond, Virginia, January 11, 1863, a son<strong>of</strong> William A. <strong>and</strong> Cornelia (Thompson) Charters. His fa<strong>the</strong>r was a native<strong>of</strong> New York State, but his parents removed to Virginia when he was twoyears <strong>of</strong> age <strong>and</strong> he grew up in <strong>the</strong> old commonwealth. He became identifiedwith <strong>the</strong> insurance business in Richmond, <strong>and</strong> was also chief <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fire department <strong>of</strong> that city. He was killed in <strong>the</strong> accident when <strong>the</strong> State Capitol fellat Richmond in 1870, being at that time thirty-six years <strong>of</strong> age. During <strong>the</strong>war he had enlisted in <strong>the</strong> Confederate army, <strong>and</strong> was captain <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> companyknown as <strong>the</strong> "Young Guard <strong>of</strong> Richmond." His wife, a native <strong>of</strong> Virginia,died at Richmond at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> thirty-six.Colonel Charters was <strong>the</strong> fourth <strong>of</strong> six children, all now deceased excepthimself <strong>and</strong> one sister. As a boy he attended <strong>the</strong> public schools <strong>of</strong> Richmond<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n entered <strong>the</strong> law department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Washington <strong>and</strong> Lee University,graduating in 1883. He was at that time twenty years <strong>of</strong> age, <strong>and</strong> coming
