Mr. Lancaster continued to hold <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice until1914, when he in turn was defeated by <strong>the</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>son <strong>of</strong> his old opponent.In 1916, Mr. Mannheim was elected for four years without opposition.On April 6,1908, Mr. Mannheim was united in marriage with Miss LeonoraIrene Beinbry, who is a daughter <strong>of</strong> Mrs. Cora Bembry, a well-known family<strong>of</strong> Pulaski County. Mr. <strong>and</strong> Mrs. Mannheim have three children: Bernhardt,who was born in 1909; Ruth Louise, who was born in 1913; <strong>and</strong> an infantson, born in 1916.Formerly Mr. Mannheim was a member <strong>of</strong> Company E, Second <strong>Georgia</strong>State Militia, <strong>and</strong> was sergeant <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> company at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> its disb<strong>and</strong>ing.He is fraternally identified with <strong>the</strong> Odd Fellows, <strong>the</strong> Knights <strong>of</strong> Pythias<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Woodmen <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 'World.N. Among <strong>the</strong> men who are lending strength <strong>and</strong> solidity to<strong>the</strong> banking interests <strong>of</strong> Hawkinsville, <strong>Georgia</strong>, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> foremost is N. A.Jelks, president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Planters Bank. It is difficult to conceive <strong>of</strong> a moresolid combination for <strong>the</strong> attainment <strong>of</strong> financial security than a bank foundedupon <strong>the</strong> prosperity <strong>and</strong> l<strong>and</strong>ed values <strong>of</strong> such a rich agricultural section asthat <strong>of</strong> this part <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>. Mr. Jelks is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> largest stockholders in<strong>the</strong> bank <strong>and</strong> his status as a citizen is typical <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> material upon which itrests <strong>and</strong> which has made <strong>the</strong> institution <strong>of</strong> which he is <strong>the</strong> directing headillustrative <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> best type <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bank in a farming community somethingfounded upon a rock, which <strong>the</strong> peculations <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> panics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> metropoliscannot affect.Mr. Jelks was born at Hawkinsville, Pulaski County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, September 21,1873, <strong>and</strong> is a son <strong>of</strong> N. W. <strong>and</strong> Mary E. (Bozinan) Jelks. His fa<strong>the</strong>r,a native also <strong>of</strong> Pulaski, was engaged here for some time in <strong>the</strong> cotton warehouse business, but prior to <strong>the</strong> Civil war went to Florida, where he took uporange culture. He was only sixteen years <strong>of</strong> age when he enlisted in <strong>the</strong>army <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Confederacy, <strong>and</strong> at <strong>the</strong> close <strong>of</strong> that struggle returned to<strong>Georgia</strong> <strong>and</strong> lived for some years at Hawkinsville. He again went to Floridasubsequently <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re died in 1876, aged only twenty-nine years. Mrs. Jelks,who survives, lived at Hawkinsville <strong>and</strong> is sixty-two years <strong>of</strong> age. There weretwo children in <strong>the</strong> family: Mrs. E. W. Goode, living at Hawkinsville;<strong>and</strong> N. A.N. A. Jelks was but three years <strong>of</strong> age at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> his fa<strong>the</strong>r's death,but he was carefully reared by his mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> was given good educationaladvantages. After completing <strong>the</strong> course in <strong>the</strong> Hawkinsville public schools,he entered Moore's Business College, Atlanta, <strong>and</strong> after his graduation <strong>the</strong>refrom became connected with <strong>the</strong> J. 0. Jelks Cotton Company, at Hawkinsville,where he received his introduction to business methods. He remained withthat company for nine years, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n entered <strong>the</strong> Planters Bank at Hawkinsville, first as assistant cashier, being subsequently advanced to <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong>cashier. With <strong>the</strong> founding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pulaski County Bank, he became its president, <strong>and</strong> has continued in this capacity to <strong>the</strong> present time. Aside from hisbanking connections, Mr.-Jelks has been interested in various o<strong>the</strong>r enterprises,included among which are <strong>the</strong> Hawkinsville & Florida Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Railroad, <strong>of</strong>which he was treasurer for four years, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hawkinsville Compress Company, <strong>of</strong> which he became treasurer at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> its inception. Each venturewith which he has been connected has been benefited by his energy <strong>and</strong> ability,<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> fact that his name is connected with a concern places upon it a stamp<strong>of</strong> approval that is recognized <strong>and</strong> appreciated by <strong>the</strong> public. His associatesrely absolutely upon his judgment, foresight <strong>and</strong> acumen. Mr.. Jelks is amember <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Baptist Church, to which his family also belongs. His politicalallegiance is given unreservedly to <strong>the</strong> democratic party, but he has not beena seeker for public favors. However, he is ready at all times to perform <strong>the</strong>
