GEORGIA AND GEORGIANS 3177He has been a zealous worker in behalf <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> principles <strong>and</strong> policies <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> democratic party. When in September, 1915, <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> city recorderwas created in connection with <strong>the</strong> municipal government <strong>of</strong> Amerieus, hewas elected <strong>the</strong> first incumbent <strong>of</strong> that position, <strong>and</strong> has continued to serve<strong>the</strong>re with characteristic loyalty <strong>and</strong> efficiency. He is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> board<strong>of</strong> stewards <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> local Methodist Episcopal Church South, <strong>and</strong> a popularteacher in its Sunday school. He is identified with <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> State BarAssociation, <strong>and</strong> is affiliated with <strong>the</strong> Chi Phi college fraternity. Mr. Marshallwas married November 14, 1916, to Miss Mattie Hunter, a daughter <strong>of</strong>Dr. T. W. Hunter, <strong>of</strong> Quitman County.ISRAEL MANNHEIM. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> leading men <strong>of</strong> Hawkinsville, <strong>Georgia</strong>, isIsrael Mannheim, now clerk <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Superior Court <strong>of</strong> Pulaski County. In <strong>the</strong>true sense he is a self-made man, having depended' on his own efforts fromhis entrance into business life, despite youth <strong>and</strong> inexperience making rapid<strong>and</strong> nonorable progress <strong>and</strong> winning <strong>the</strong> approbation <strong>and</strong> confidence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>public <strong>the</strong>reby. No young man placed as was Mr. Mannheim, could havebeen elected to so important <strong>and</strong> responsible an <strong>of</strong>fice as clerk <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> SuperiorCourt without having proved <strong>the</strong> possession <strong>of</strong> sterling character.Israel Mannheim was born at Hawkinsville, <strong>Georgia</strong>, August 7, 1883, <strong>and</strong>is a son <strong>of</strong> B. <strong>and</strong> Mattie (Burch) Mannheim, <strong>and</strong> a gr<strong>and</strong>son on <strong>the</strong> maternalside <strong>of</strong> E. A. <strong>and</strong> Mary (Beard) Burch, <strong>the</strong> last named belonging to one <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> old affluent families <strong>of</strong> Floyd County, <strong>Georgia</strong>.B. Mannheim, fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> Israel Mannheim, was born in <strong>the</strong> City <strong>of</strong> Berlin,Germany. From that country he came to <strong>the</strong> United States when a boy <strong>of</strong>seventeen years <strong>and</strong> at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> outbreak <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> war between <strong>the</strong> stateswas a resident <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State <strong>of</strong> New York. There he enlisted in <strong>the</strong> Federalarmy <strong>and</strong> subsequently became a sergeant in General Sickles' brigade, <strong>the</strong>Sixty-sixth New York Volunteers. His service as a soldier continued for fouryears but after peace was fully restored he made his way to <strong>Georgia</strong>, doubtlesshaving become acquainted with its many advantages during his militaryyears. He chose Jlawkinsville for a home <strong>and</strong> for forty years <strong>the</strong>reafter wasengaged in a mercantile business in this city, where his death occurred September 11, 1914, at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> seventy years. He was a man <strong>of</strong> solid worth<strong>and</strong> frequently served in public capacities <strong>and</strong> for several terms was amember <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city's aldermanic body <strong>and</strong> a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> board <strong>of</strong> education.His marriage took place in <strong>Georgia</strong>, to Mattie Burch, who died at Hawkinsvillein 1905, at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> fifty years. They were parents <strong>of</strong> five children : M., whois a business man <strong>of</strong> this city; J., who is a farmer in Pulaski County; Edward,who is a salesman; Israel; <strong>and</strong> A., who is in <strong>the</strong> tailoring business at Hawkinsville.In bx>yhood Israel Mannheim attended <strong>the</strong> public schools <strong>of</strong> Hawkinsvillearid was creditably graduated from <strong>the</strong> high school at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> seventeenyearsi From choice he decided upon a business career, becoming a salesmanin <strong>the</strong> clothing line <strong>and</strong> for twelve years was manager <strong>of</strong> a well-known house.In an interview with a prominent public man concerning his early businesslife, he said: " I never made a trade with a man who I had to dodge <strong>the</strong> nextday because <strong>of</strong> that trade.'' This remark deserved quoting in this connectionbecause Mr. Mannheim has conducted his business in just this way, honestybeing <strong>the</strong> sound foundation on which he has built.In politics Mr. Mannheim has always been a democrat. In 1914 he waselected clerk <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Superior Court <strong>and</strong> in this connection <strong>the</strong>re is an interesting story told. For a period <strong>of</strong> sixteen years <strong>the</strong> maternal gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong>Mr. Mannheim served in <strong>the</strong> same <strong>of</strong>fice continuously, as clerk <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> SuperiorCourt <strong>of</strong> Pulaski County. Following <strong>the</strong> Civil war many changes came about<strong>and</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se was <strong>the</strong> defeat <strong>of</strong> Clerk E. A. Burch <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> election <strong>of</strong>J. W. Lancaster as clerk <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Superior Court, in 1883, <strong>the</strong> year that
