He removed to Savannah in1891 <strong>and</strong> at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> his death in 1902 was serving as judge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> SuperiorV" Court; He passed aw?y at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> sixty-four. During <strong>the</strong> war he held <strong>the</strong>rank <strong>of</strong> captain <strong>and</strong> was also brevet major on <strong>the</strong> staff <strong>of</strong> Gen. Howell Cobb.His wife was a native <strong>of</strong> A<strong>the</strong>ns,.<strong>Georgia</strong>, <strong>and</strong> daughter <strong>of</strong> Lieut-Col. LewisStevenson Craig <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United States Army. She died in 1880 at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong>thirtv^wo. Thcif five children. were Pope, James, Elizabeth, David <strong>and</strong>Craig.Dr. Craig Barrow was reared in A<strong>the</strong>ns, attended <strong>the</strong> public school <strong>the</strong>re,<strong>and</strong> in 1896 graduated Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts from <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>.Por his pr<strong>of</strong>essional preparation he entered <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Maryl<strong>and</strong> atBaltimore, where he was graduated in 1900, <strong>and</strong> for twelve months aftergraduation pursued his studies abroad, particularly at <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Breslau,Germany, He has made somewhat <strong>of</strong> a specialty in surgery <strong>and</strong> diseases<strong>of</strong> children.Beginning practice at Savannah in <strong>the</strong> fall <strong>of</strong> 1902, he has since remainedin that city, <strong>and</strong> is now medical director <strong>and</strong> superintendent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>Infirmary <strong>and</strong> head physician <strong>of</strong> children's department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Telfair Hospital <strong>and</strong> is surgeon for <strong>the</strong> Seaboard Railroad <strong>and</strong> Merchants & MinersTransportation Company. He is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chatham County <strong>and</strong> StateMedical societies, <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Medical Association, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> American Medical Association. He is active in <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Young Men's ChristianAssociation, is a democrat in politics, <strong>and</strong> for several years held <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong>alderman up to 1913.In January, 1906, Doctor Barrow married Miss Elfrida De Renne. Theyare <strong>the</strong> parents <strong>of</strong> three children: Craig Barrow, Jr., born in October, 1906;Elfrida Harrow, born in October, 1909; <strong>and</strong> Muriel, born December 23, 1913.These children were all born in Savannah <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> oldest is now attendingschool.HKNRY MORBELL ATKINSON. As one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> leading citizens <strong>of</strong> Atlanta, <strong>of</strong><strong>Georgia</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> South, <strong>and</strong> a man who is identified with most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>important enterprises <strong>of</strong> his state, Henry Morrell Atkinson st<strong>and</strong>s prominently in <strong>the</strong> public eye. His career has been varied, <strong>and</strong> includes a picturesque period <strong>of</strong> pioneering in <strong>the</strong> West. Since turning his attention tobusiness, twenty-nine years ago, he has successfully launched more than oneconcern <strong>and</strong> has been a factor in <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> South <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>State <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> in particular. He is best known, probably, as a banker<strong>and</strong> in connection with transportation, <strong>and</strong> his street <strong>and</strong> electric light <strong>and</strong>power interests are large anvl valuable. Mr. Atkinson was born November13, 1862, at Brookline, Massachusetts, his parents being George <strong>and</strong> Elizabeth(Staigg) Atkinson. On both sides <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> family he is descended from earlycolonial settlers, <strong>and</strong> his paternal ancestors were natives <strong>of</strong> Lancashire,Engl<strong>and</strong>, who came to America <strong>and</strong> settled at Boston in 1635.The early education <strong>of</strong> Henry M. Atkinson was received in <strong>the</strong> privateschools <strong>of</strong> Boston, <strong>and</strong> he <strong>the</strong>n entered Harvard University <strong>and</strong> graduatedfrom that institution in 1884 with <strong>the</strong> degree <strong>of</strong> Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Art. Afterleaving college he went to <strong>the</strong> West <strong>and</strong> spent <strong>the</strong> years <strong>of</strong> 1884 <strong>and</strong> 1885 onseveral Western ranches, returning to Boston at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> latter year.In September, 1886, at <strong>the</strong> instance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late Samuel M. Inman, Mr.Atkinson came to Atlanta, <strong>Georgia</strong>, <strong>and</strong> entered <strong>the</strong> employ <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> firm <strong>of</strong>S. M. Inman & Co. in <strong>the</strong> capacity <strong>of</strong> cotton sampler <strong>and</strong> buyer.Shortly after coming to Atlanta, Mr. Atkinson became interested in <strong>the</strong>Home Loan & Banking Company, <strong>of</strong> which concern he was made vice president in 1889. In 1891 he <strong>and</strong> his associates organized <strong>the</strong> Soxi<strong>the</strong>rn Banking& Trust Company.
