3166 GEORGIA AND GEORGIANSHe was a man <strong>of</strong> strong character <strong>and</strong> energetic habits, which he carried intoevery phase <strong>of</strong> life that he touched. A member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> church society <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Methodist Episcopal denomination, he took an active part in its affairs, inwhich he was acknowledged a gifted leader. Mrs. Murphy has ever beenequally prominent in <strong>the</strong> activities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Methodist Episcopal Church <strong>of</strong>Augusta. Still continuing her residence here, she occupies <strong>the</strong> old homestead which was <strong>the</strong> scene <strong>of</strong> her married <strong>and</strong> family life.At that home, on November 1, 1875, was born to <strong>the</strong> parents noted above,<strong>the</strong> son whom <strong>the</strong>y named Eugene Edmund. He was <strong>the</strong> only child <strong>of</strong> hisparents <strong>and</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir deepest wishes was to give him a thorough <strong>and</strong>complete education. The Augusta public schools, Richmond Academy, <strong>the</strong>University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> <strong>and</strong> Johns Hopkins University <strong>of</strong> Baltimore have allcontributed to his intellectual achievement. His first degree, that <strong>of</strong> Bachelor<strong>of</strong> Science, was granted at <strong>the</strong> State University at A<strong>the</strong>ns, in 1895. Hismedical course was pursued in <strong>the</strong> same excellent institution for three years,at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> which time he received his degree <strong>of</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> Medicine. Thatwork Doctor Murphy supplemented with post-graduate specialized study at <strong>the</strong>famous Baltimore institution, where he spent a year. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> doctor'sspecialties is orthopedic surgery, a new <strong>and</strong> very valuable as well as surpassingly delicate phase <strong>of</strong> practice. Doctor Murphy is not only a thoroughscholar in all <strong>the</strong> lore <strong>of</strong> his pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>and</strong> a particularly successful practitioner, but is also keenly critical along lines <strong>of</strong> independent research. Heis a contributor to <strong>the</strong> Medical Journal <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>; is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>American Medical Society, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> Medical Society <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> similarorganization <strong>of</strong> Richmond County; <strong>and</strong> has fur<strong>the</strong>rmore been honored with<strong>the</strong> vice presidency <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state society.Doctor. Murphy is by no means without honor in his own country. For <strong>the</strong>past eight years he has been president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Augusta Board <strong>of</strong> Health, <strong>and</strong>for <strong>the</strong> last fourteen years has been a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> medical faculty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>.It was on November 14, 1900, that Doctor Murphy established his home,being <strong>the</strong>n united in marriage with Miss Will Roney <strong>of</strong> Augusta. Mrs. Murphywas before her marriage as she still is a popular member <strong>of</strong> Augusta society.Her fa<strong>the</strong>r, Judge Roney, was former incumbent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bench <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> SuperiorCourt <strong>of</strong> August Circuit <strong>and</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> leading attorneys <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city. Thehome <strong>of</strong> Doctor <strong>and</strong> Mrs. Murphy is distinguished both for social <strong>and</strong> intellectual culture. They are members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Country Club <strong>of</strong> Augusta <strong>and</strong> also <strong>the</strong>center <strong>of</strong> a circle <strong>of</strong> book-lovers <strong>and</strong> thinkers. Ornithology is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>doctor's hobbies <strong>and</strong> he also finds diversion in occasional excursions into <strong>the</strong>old familiar fields <strong>of</strong> history <strong>and</strong> literature. Fraternally, he is connectedwith <strong>the</strong> organizations <strong>of</strong> Fellowcraft, Ancient Free <strong>and</strong> Accepted Masons,<strong>and</strong> Benevolent <strong>and</strong> Protective Order <strong>of</strong> Elks. **GEN. NATHANIEL GREENE, who played such a leading part in <strong>the</strong> finalcapture <strong>and</strong> surrender <strong>of</strong> Cornwallis, <strong>the</strong> comm<strong>and</strong>er <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> British army,was named by Congress as one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> great heroes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Revolution. SouthCarolina <strong>and</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>, more practical in <strong>the</strong>ir displays <strong>of</strong> appreciation, presented him with two plantations, <strong>and</strong> in 1785 he located with his family atMulberry Grove, twelve miles above Savannah, where he died on <strong>the</strong> 19th <strong>of</strong>June <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> following year. His remains were first buried in <strong>the</strong> old ColonialCemetery at Savannah- The site <strong>of</strong> his grave was lost for over a century,but in 1901, through <strong>the</strong> investigations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Rhode Isl<strong>and</strong> State Society <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Cincinnati, <strong>of</strong> which General Greene was a member, <strong>the</strong> remains wererelocated <strong>and</strong> finally (in 1902) reinterred at <strong>the</strong> base <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Greene monument in Savannah.JAMES GUNN, who was a captain <strong>of</strong> dragoons during <strong>the</strong> Revolutionarywar, became a resident <strong>of</strong> Savannah at <strong>the</strong> conclusion <strong>of</strong> hostilities with Eng-
