2818 GEORGIA AND GEORGIANSfor his pr<strong>of</strong>ession, in a quick grasp <strong>of</strong> salient points, an impressive manner <strong>and</strong>strong influence over a jury, 'as well as considerable oratorical gifts. Air.Stapletoii is a native son <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>, born at Brownwood, Terrell County,March 31, 1890, his parents being John Lawson <strong>and</strong> Marion (Killen) Stapleton,<strong>and</strong> a gr<strong>and</strong>son <strong>of</strong> J. H. Stapleton <strong>and</strong> T. N. Killen.John Lawson Stapleton was born in 1846, in <strong>Georgia</strong>, <strong>and</strong> was educatedin <strong>the</strong> public schools, which he was attending at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> sixteen years when<strong>the</strong> Civil, war broke out <strong>and</strong> he enlisted for service in <strong>the</strong> Confederate army.He took part in a number <strong>of</strong> engagements, but was never wounded or takenprisoner, <strong>and</strong> was finally made a guard at Aiidersonville Prison. His services extended over <strong>the</strong> entire period <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> war, <strong>and</strong> his record was that <strong>of</strong> afaithful, courageous <strong>and</strong> honorable soldier. At <strong>the</strong> close <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> war he engaged in planting <strong>and</strong> farming, but in his later years turned his attention tomedicine, educated himself for that pr<strong>of</strong>ession, <strong>and</strong> for- many years was engaged in practice in Terrell County, where he died in 1904, at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong>fifty-eight years. Mr. Stapleton, also born, reared <strong>and</strong> educated in <strong>Georgia</strong>,survives Doctor Stapleton. She has been <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> six sons <strong>and</strong> onedaughter, <strong>the</strong> latter <strong>of</strong> whom died at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> two years, Mariam. The sons |'are as follows: Newton Lawson, a graduate <strong>of</strong> Mercer University, <strong>and</strong> nowa practicing attorney <strong>of</strong> Colquitt, Miller County, <strong>Georgia</strong>; Dr. Hiram, agraduate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same institution <strong>and</strong> now engaged in <strong>the</strong> practice <strong>of</strong> medicineat.Colquitt: Edgar Hadley, a graduate <strong>of</strong> Mercer, who is a resident <strong>of</strong> Brownwood,<strong>Georgia</strong>; Dr.-J. Bennett, a'well-known dental practitioner <strong>of</strong> Dawson,<strong>Georgia</strong>; Raymonde, <strong>of</strong> this review; <strong>and</strong> Sidney Franklin, who is now astudent at Mercer University.Raymonde Stapleton received his early education in <strong>the</strong> public schools <strong>of</strong>Terrell County, <strong>and</strong>, having decided upon <strong>the</strong> law as <strong>the</strong> medium throughwhich to work out his life's success, prepared himself for college <strong>and</strong> matriculated at Mercer University in 1908, in Macon, where he completed his literarycourse. He <strong>the</strong>n took his junior law course, which he completed in 1912;<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n took a senior course in law, graduating in 1913 with <strong>the</strong> degree <strong>of</strong>Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Laws. Mr. Stapleton at onee came to Elb,erton <strong>and</strong> opened an _/<strong>of</strong>fice, <strong>and</strong> here has continued in <strong>the</strong> enjoyment <strong>of</strong> an excellent business. ^In June <strong>of</strong> 1915 he accepted <strong>the</strong> place as executive secretary underGovernor Harris but resigned that position to become effective January 1st,at which time he will again resume <strong>the</strong> practice <strong>of</strong> law in Elherton <strong>and</strong> willenter upon his duties as solicitor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> City Court <strong>of</strong> Elberton, having beenappointed to that <strong>of</strong>fice by Judge W. D. Tutt.As compared with many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> biographies which appear in this work <strong>of</strong>men who have been engaged in <strong>the</strong> legal pr<strong>of</strong>ession, Mr. Stapleton is but abeginner, yet <strong>of</strong> none <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> younger generation' may it be said .that <strong>the</strong>y havelaid <strong>the</strong> foundation for success, popularity <strong>and</strong> honor, more firmly <strong>and</strong> withgreater wisdom than in his place. Mr. Stapleton continues to be an ardentstudent, has a large <strong>and</strong> valuable legal library, <strong>and</strong> maintains membershipiu several pr<strong>of</strong>essional associations. He also belongs to several college fraternities <strong>of</strong> his alma mater. A democrat in politics, he has not yet found timeto engage actively in legal matters, preferring to confine his activities to a/ performance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> duties <strong>of</strong> good citizenship. He is single <strong>and</strong> resides atElberton.CRAIG BARROW, M. D. The work <strong>of</strong> Doctor Barrow as a physician <strong>and</strong>surgeon has been done in Savannah for <strong>the</strong> past thirteen years. His colleagues recognize in him one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ablest in <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ession. Doctor Barrowis a son <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late Pope Barrow, who at one time represented <strong>the</strong> State <strong>of</strong><strong>Georgia</strong> in <strong>the</strong> United States Senate.Born at A<strong>the</strong>ns, <strong>Georgia</strong>, May 12, 1876, Dr. Craig Barrow is a son <strong>of</strong> Pope<strong>and</strong> Sally (Craig) Barrow, both <strong>of</strong> whom were natives <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>.
