Thishas also been very successful <strong>and</strong> is now <strong>the</strong> largest Catholic boys' school in<strong>Georgia</strong>, at <strong>the</strong> present time having 160 pupils.Rev. Patrick McMahon, pastor <strong>of</strong> St.. Patrick's Church, Augusta, was bornin. Savannah, <strong>Georgia</strong>, March 19, 1855, son <strong>of</strong> James <strong>and</strong> Hannah (Healey)McMahon. His parents, both natives <strong>of</strong> Irel<strong>and</strong>, came to America in 1849,being' married in Savannah in 1852. There James McMabon became a wellknown business man, <strong>and</strong> a well known <strong>and</strong> popular citizen. During <strong>the</strong>Civil war he served in <strong>the</strong> militia under Capt. James Brown, <strong>and</strong> was himselfpromoted to <strong>the</strong> rank <strong>of</strong> captain. He died in 1889 at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> sixty-eightyears. His wife Hannah passed away in 1883 at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> fifty-eight. Six<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir eleven children are now living, namely: Sister Mary Rose, a Sister<strong>of</strong> Mercy in a cbnvent at Savannah, <strong>Georgia</strong>; a daughter living at Jacksonville ; Mrs. Anna Burke, residing at Port Arthur; Kate, unmarried, a resident<strong>of</strong> Jacksonville, Nora, <strong>of</strong> Atlanta, <strong>and</strong> Rev. Patrick MeMahon, <strong>of</strong> Augusta.Rev. Patrick McMahon in his boyhood attended both public <strong>and</strong> parochialschools in Savannah. His education was <strong>the</strong>n continued in a college at Dublin,Irel<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> subsequently at St. Mary's University. Baltimore, Maryl<strong>and</strong>,where he was graduated in 1878. After his ordination he was sent to St.Joseph's Church at Macon, <strong>Georgia</strong>, <strong>of</strong> which he had charge for nearly twoyears, afterward becoming pastor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Catholic Church at St. Albans. thisstate. In 1882 he was sent to Atlanta to found St. Peter's <strong>and</strong> St. Paul'sChurch, <strong>of</strong> which he was subsequently pastor for nine years, this being afterwards called <strong>the</strong> Sacred He^t Congregation. Fa<strong>the</strong>r McMahon's next assignment Was to St. Patrick's Church at Savannah, where he remained seven years.From <strong>the</strong>re he came to St. Patrick's.in Augusta <strong>and</strong> had charge <strong>of</strong> this church<strong>and</strong> parish for several years, being subsequently transferred to Washington,<strong>Georgia</strong>, <strong>and</strong> from <strong>the</strong>re, five years later, to Albany. After two years as pastorin <strong>the</strong> latter place, he returned in 1914 to St. Patrick's Church in Augusta,<strong>and</strong> has since been stationed here, his parishioners regarding him as an old<strong>and</strong> tried friend. He has now been in <strong>the</strong> priesthood for thirty-seven .years,during which time he has been a hard worker, always devoted to duty, <strong>and</strong> hasbeen successfu^in increasing <strong>the</strong> growth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> parishes over which he has hadcharge <strong>and</strong> stimulating interest in <strong>the</strong> religious services. As pastor <strong>of</strong> St.Patrick's his duties are many <strong>and</strong> onerous, but he discharges <strong>the</strong>m with fidelity<strong>and</strong> has won <strong>the</strong> respect <strong>and</strong> esteem, both <strong>of</strong> his own congregation <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>citizens <strong>of</strong> Augusta generally.ASA GRIGGS CANDLER. The seventeen-story C<strong>and</strong>ler <strong>of</strong>fice building inAtlanta is only one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> various monuments to <strong>the</strong> enterprise <strong>of</strong> A. G.C<strong>and</strong>ler in <strong>the</strong> business metropolis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>astern states. Perhaps hisgreatest distinction in a business way was in supplying <strong>the</strong> genius <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>business builder to <strong>the</strong> Coca-Cola industry, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re are probably few peoplein <strong>Georgia</strong> who are not aware that Mr. C<strong>and</strong>ler is president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Coca ColaCompany.This foremost <strong>Georgia</strong> capitalist <strong>and</strong> man <strong>of</strong> affairs was born in Villa Rica,Carroll County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, December 30, 1851. His parents were SamuelCharles <strong>and</strong> Martha (Beall) C<strong>and</strong>ler. He is one <strong>of</strong> several bro<strong>the</strong>rs who havegained high distinction in different avenues <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> life <strong>and</strong> affairs. Hisbro<strong>the</strong>r W. A. C<strong>and</strong>ler is a bishop <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Methodist Episcopal Church, South.Ano<strong>the</strong>r bro<strong>the</strong>r John S. C<strong>and</strong>ler was formerly a justice on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>Supreme bench.All <strong>the</strong> C<strong>and</strong>ler boys have ascribed much <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir success in life to <strong>the</strong>fine training <strong>and</strong> influence which came from <strong>the</strong>ir -early home. Theirfa<strong>the</strong>r, Samuel Charles C<strong>and</strong>ler, was a merchant <strong>and</strong> farmer, possessed <strong>of</strong>superior business ability, <strong>and</strong> was noted for his honesty <strong>of</strong> purpose <strong>and</strong>promptness <strong>of</strong> action. He had most positive convictions on all moral ques-
