3138 GEORGIA AND GEORGIANSL. D. FAVER. Less than thirty years ago L. D. .Faver was working as aclerk in one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> small stores <strong>of</strong> Wilkes County. He lias brought unusualenergy <strong>and</strong> enterprise to his business activities, <strong>and</strong> is now proprietor <strong>of</strong> awholesale grocery establishment at Washington <strong>and</strong> through hi%s salesmen distributes groceries all over that section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state.He is a native <strong>of</strong> Wilkes County, where he was born October 29, 1867, ason <strong>of</strong> Dr. L. D. <strong>and</strong> Martha (Howard) Faver, both natives <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>. TheFavers originally came from Virginia, settling in Wilkes County in <strong>the</strong> earlydays. Dr. L. D. Faver practiced as a physician <strong>and</strong> surgeon in Wilkes Countyuntil his death in 1873 at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> forty. He had served as a surgeon in <strong>the</strong>Confederate army during <strong>the</strong> Civil war. The mo<strong>the</strong>r died in 1910 in WilkesCounty.The fourth in a family <strong>of</strong> six children, L. D. Faver as a boy attended <strong>the</strong>public schools <strong>of</strong> Wilkes County, <strong>and</strong> gave up his studies in order to learn <strong>the</strong>merch<strong>and</strong>ise business in <strong>the</strong> store <strong>of</strong> a Mr. Green. In a few years he hadacquired <strong>the</strong> experience <strong>and</strong> a modest capital which enabled him to start a business for himself, <strong>and</strong> since 1898 he has conducted a wholesale concern at Washington, <strong>and</strong> has made it one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> largest jobbing firms in that part <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>.He is sole owner, <strong>and</strong> has several salesmen distributing goods on <strong>the</strong> road. Mr.Faver is also a director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Planters Exchange Bank, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pope Manufacturing Company, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Central <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> Railway Company. He is nowserving as mayor <strong>of</strong> Washington, is an active democrat, <strong>and</strong> a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Baptist Church.EUSTACE C. BUTTS. A lawyer with a large practice <strong>and</strong> a high st<strong>and</strong>ingin <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Circuit <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>, E. C. Butts not only represents a largeprivate clientage but is also a man <strong>of</strong> affairs in <strong>the</strong> City <strong>of</strong> Brunswick, <strong>and</strong> isnow serving as president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chamber <strong>of</strong> Commerce.Born at Bainbridge, Decatur County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, May 11, 1875, he is a son<strong>of</strong> Dr. Judson A. <strong>and</strong> Sarah (Wilson) Butts, both <strong>of</strong> whom were natives <strong>of</strong><strong>Georgia</strong>, His fa<strong>the</strong>r is an old school physician <strong>and</strong> a man who has endearedhimself to two generations <strong>of</strong> people in Decatur <strong>and</strong> Glynn counties, <strong>and</strong> isstill in active practice at Brunswick, being now seventy-seven years <strong>of</strong> age.During <strong>the</strong> war he went out as a Confederate soldier at <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>and</strong>served until <strong>the</strong> close <strong>of</strong> hostilities. He was a lieutenant colonel in his regiment <strong>and</strong> also served as surgeon with <strong>the</strong> rank <strong>of</strong> major. His wife died atBrunswick in 1905 at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> fifty-five.Fifth in a family <strong>of</strong> nine children, E. C. Butts acquired his early education in <strong>the</strong> common schools <strong>of</strong> Glynn County, <strong>and</strong> read law under Thomas D.Brantly <strong>and</strong> also with Mr. Bennett at Brunswick. Admitted in 1899, he hassince been in active practice at Brunswick, <strong>and</strong> has h<strong>and</strong>led a large amount<strong>of</strong> important litigation. He is general counsel for <strong>the</strong> local street railwaycompany <strong>and</strong> for <strong>the</strong> Brunswick Light <strong>and</strong> Water Company. He is a member<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Brunswick <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> State Bar associations.In 1902 <strong>and</strong> again in 1906 Mr. Butts was elected a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>State Legislature <strong>and</strong> be served as mayor <strong>of</strong> Brunswick in 1911-12. He haspassed all <strong>the</strong> chairs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> local lodge <strong>of</strong> Elks, is a Mason, is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Knights <strong>of</strong> Pythias <strong>and</strong> is first lieutenant in <strong>the</strong> Brunswick Rifles, Company G<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> Militia. He takes much interest in military affairs <strong>and</strong> is doingall he can to promote adequate preparedness in <strong>the</strong> military organization <strong>of</strong>his home state. Mr. Butts served as a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> board <strong>of</strong> education from1910 to 1914. He is unmarried <strong>and</strong> lives at his fa<strong>the</strong>r's home.FRANK L. ESKEIDGE, PH. G., M.
