3128 GEORGIA AND GEORGIANShe went to Douglas, Arizona, and there for six years continued to carry on s.large and important law business. His next location was the City of NewYork, where he became interested in a business venture, but this did not meetwith his expectations and after about one year he returned to the South andspent a short time in his native city. Mr. Weatherby came to Brunswick, and here accepted the secretaryship of the Brunswick Board of Trade, whichwas badly in need of reorganization. His energy, organizing ability andexecutive power soon made themselves felt, the board was placed upon a soundfinancial basis, and the results accomplished by it almost immediately madeevident the fact that the right man had been found for the place. His achieve-*nients in this direction attracted the attention of business men of other localities, and he was prevailed upon to accept the position of secretary- for theTom Bigbee River Improvement Association of Mississippi and Alabama. Heis also a former vice president of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce.Mr. Weatherby has taken and still is taking a leading part in the projectconcerning the deepening of the Altamaha, Okmulgee and Okonee rivers. Hewas chosen, at the conference held at Macon in 1913, statistician, and in thatcapacity compiled the first set of statistics on the subject, which now forms theleading argument in behalf of the project at Washington, District of Columbia. Mr. Weatherby is now the recognized authority on harbors and rivers ofthe board of United States engineers. Since the reorganization of theBrunswick Board of Trade he has developed the possibilities of the Browning& Brown canning industry here, and largely through his efforts a new $250,-000 company has commenced operations. He also did much to secure toBrunswick the creosote plant, a $200,000 concern, but his specialty is river andharbor work, on which he is an recognized authority, and in connection withthis line of endeavor has prepared data for the board of engineers of theUnited States army, which, after a perusal of his statistics, recommended thedeepening of the Brunswick harbor. Mr. Weatherby at this time is a candidate for the position of secretary to the Federal Trade Commission, and thathis work has been recognized and appreciated is made evident by the fact thathe has the endorsement of the United States congressmen from Alabama,^Pennsylvania, Mississippi, South Carolina, Ohio and Georgia; John T.Cochran, president of the Alabama, Tennessee & Northern Railroad; UnitedStates Senator Hardwick of Georgia; United States Senator Vardaman ofMississippi; the Darien, Brunswick and Quitman boards of trade; Brig.-Gen.D. C. Kingaman, of the United States army; Franklin D. Roosevelt, assistantsecretary of the navy; W. L. Park, vice president of the Illinois CentralRailroad; and H. H. Raymond, president of the Mallory Steamship Company.Mr. Weatherby was married at Tombstone, Arizona, in April, 1905, toMiss Olive Mabel Brems, a native of Chicago, Illinois, and a daughter of JohnBrems, of that city, Mr. Brems being a native of Germany. Mr. Weatherby is a member of theSigma Nu college fraternity and of the Benevolent and Protective Order ofElks, but the great volume of work which ,he has assumed and to which hegives his whole-hearted attention, precludes the possibility of his taking activeparticipation in other matters. He belongs to the First Baptist Church otBirmingham, Alabama, while Mrs. Weatherby is a member of the RomanCatholic faith.CARL VINSON, who represents the Tenth Georgia District, was bornnear Milledgeville, Baldwin County, November 18, 1883.
