3118 GEORGIA AND GEORGIANScourageous men who after <strong>the</strong> misfortunes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> war assumed <strong>the</strong> bimiciis<strong>of</strong> responsibility connected with <strong>the</strong> task <strong>of</strong> rehabilitating <strong>the</strong> former iuslitutions <strong>and</strong> activities <strong>and</strong> proceeding with an ever greater development <strong>and</strong>expansion <strong>of</strong> Atlanta <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> South.Into this great work have entered many great characters, all deserving<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> memory <strong>of</strong> history. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m whose services have been continuousfor fifty years is Lyman A. Redwine, vice president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dougherty-Little-Redwine Company. The phenomenal development <strong>of</strong> Atlanta is reflected inhis own success <strong>and</strong> prosperity. He has been in business in Atlanta since1867, <strong>and</strong> his name is one <strong>of</strong> those most closely identified with <strong>the</strong> upbuilding<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wholesale trade <strong>of</strong> that city.His first experience in <strong>the</strong> wholesale dry goods business was gained whena young man, <strong>and</strong> many would say that his success is due to <strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>the</strong>rehas been no wavering or deviation from <strong>the</strong> line which he thus chose in hisearly life. He worked from <strong>the</strong> bottom up, <strong>and</strong> had experience in practicallyevery department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dry goods house. For several years he was a juniorpartner, <strong>the</strong>n a full partner, <strong>and</strong> for many years was <strong>the</strong> active buyer for<strong>the</strong> splendid house in whose title his name forms a part.He has always been allied politically with <strong>the</strong> democratic party. He is amember <strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficial board <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> First Methodist Church, <strong>and</strong> alsoa member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chamber <strong>of</strong> Commerce <strong>and</strong> Gate City Lodge, No. 2, Free<strong>and</strong> Accepted Masons.At Atlanta on June 15, 1876, he was married to Angle A. Gullatt, <strong>and</strong> toher he ascribes much <strong>of</strong> whatever success he has made. Mrs. Redwine's fa<strong>the</strong>rJames E. Gullatt, was a manufacturer <strong>of</strong> iron products at Atlanta, <strong>and</strong> wasalso a prominent figure in public affairs, serving as a city councilman <strong>and</strong>as a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> Legislature from Fulton County.!iT. In 1910 <strong>the</strong> medical fraternity <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> in <strong>the</strong><strong>Georgia</strong> Medical Association honored by election to <strong>the</strong> presidency one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ablest physicians <strong>and</strong> surgeons <strong>of</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Georgia</strong>, Dr. Thomas J. McArthur<strong>of</strong> Cordele. Doctor McArthur is also vice president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> SurgeonsClub, is a councilor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Third District Medical Society, a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Crisp County Society, <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> American Medical associations. His very high st<strong>and</strong>ing in <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ession is due to a thorough devotion to his calling <strong>and</strong> splendid natural endowment.He was born in Wilkinson County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, April 30, 1868, a son <strong>of</strong> John<strong>and</strong> Winifred (Rivers) McArthur. His parents were also natives <strong>of</strong> Wilkinson County, where his fa<strong>the</strong>r was a planter <strong>and</strong> farmer until 1903, whenhe retired <strong>and</strong> moved to Cordele, where he died at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> eighty-sevenyears. During <strong>the</strong> war between <strong>the</strong> states he was for two years in activeservice in <strong>the</strong> Confederate army, <strong>and</strong> refused promotion from his rank aslieutenant to captain <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> company. After <strong>the</strong> war he was made collector<strong>of</strong> Wilkinson County, <strong>and</strong> was always active in public affairs. The mo<strong>the</strong>rdied at Cordele in February, 1915, aged seventy-nine. There were elevenchildren, among whom Doctor McArthur was sixth in order <strong>of</strong> birth. ' Of <strong>the</strong>eight sons <strong>and</strong> three daughters, two sons <strong>and</strong> one daughter are now deceased.The o<strong>the</strong>rs are: Charles A. McArthur <strong>of</strong> Cordele; J. J. McArthur <strong>of</strong> Gordon;James F. McArthur <strong>of</strong> Atlanta; Dr. A. L. McArthur, who is postmaster <strong>of</strong>Cordele; Louis R. McArthur who lives at Lowndes County, <strong>Georgia</strong>; Mrs. J.W. Robinson, <strong>of</strong> Dover, <strong>and</strong> Mrs. W. T. Robinson <strong>of</strong> Dover.Doctor McArthur attended country schools <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gordon High School,<strong>and</strong> for four years was a teacher, a vocation which gave him most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> meanshe used to attend <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Medical College at Atlanta, where he was graduated M. D. in 1894. Doctor MeArthur has accepted every opportunity tobroaden his knowledge <strong>and</strong> experience <strong>and</strong> has associated with all <strong>the</strong> prominent men <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ession in <strong>Georgia</strong>.
