GEORGIA AND GEORGIANS 2811lias been one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> main factors in Ms advancement. His first experience wasas clerk in <strong>the</strong> Brunswick Wholesale Grocery Company, a firm no longer inexistence. He began in 1898, <strong>and</strong> put into his work every bit <strong>of</strong> energy he possessed. Along- with energy have gone a sterling honesty that has broughthim <strong>the</strong> respect <strong>of</strong> his associates <strong>and</strong> his customers. After iy2 years hetransferred his services to <strong>the</strong> Lott Lewis Company at <strong>the</strong> same city, <strong>and</strong> remained with that firm until 1904. In six years he accumulated not only experience but as a result <strong>of</strong> thrift <strong>and</strong> self denial had a small amount <strong>of</strong> capital<strong>and</strong> his ability comm<strong>and</strong>ed him sufficient credit to start in business on his ownaccoxint. In October <strong>of</strong> that year he established <strong>the</strong> V. C. Bourne & Co. wholesa]eproduce company. From <strong>the</strong> start, though on a very modest scale, itproved* a successful undertaking. He has steadily directed its management,<strong>and</strong> his confidence has been more than justified. His company now has asplendid trade covering all Sou<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Georgia</strong>, <strong>and</strong> several salesmen representit on <strong>the</strong> road. .Mr. Bourne gives his personal management to <strong>the</strong> local business, <strong>and</strong> particularly <strong>the</strong> retail trade, <strong>and</strong> has surrounded himself with astaff <strong>of</strong> competent employes.This successful young merchant was born in Effingham County, <strong>Georgia</strong>,August 26, 1877, a son <strong>of</strong> William H. <strong>and</strong> Julia Naomi (Backley) Bourne.His fa<strong>the</strong>r was born in Virginia, but when nine years <strong>of</strong> age was brought byhis parents to <strong>Georgia</strong>. He subsequently became identified with <strong>the</strong> lumber<strong>and</strong> timber business in this state. During <strong>the</strong> war at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> sixteen hienlisted with <strong>the</strong> Oglethorpe Light Infantry, <strong>and</strong> fought with gallantry <strong>and</strong>valor until he was taken prisoner at <strong>the</strong> battle <strong>of</strong> Pulaski, <strong>and</strong> was carriednorth to New York State <strong>and</strong> held a prisoner until <strong>the</strong> surrender. He diedat Savannah, <strong>Georgia</strong>, in July, 1913, at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> sixty-nine. He was buriedwith military honors by his old comrades <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn army'. His wife, alady <strong>of</strong> refinement <strong>and</strong> culture, <strong>and</strong> a native <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>, died in April, 1906,at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> sixty-four.Of <strong>the</strong> .five children that survive, Vernon C. Bourne is <strong>the</strong> fourth in age.As a boy he attended <strong>the</strong> Chatham Academy at Savannah, <strong>and</strong> later took abusiness course in <strong>the</strong> Savannah Business College. At <strong>the</strong> conclusion <strong>of</strong> thatcourse he started to work his way upward in mercantile affairs, with whatsuccess has already been described. In politics he is a democrat, but hasnever sought any public honors. He is affiliated with <strong>the</strong> Woodmen <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>World, <strong>the</strong> Modern Woodmen <strong>of</strong> America, <strong>the</strong> Knights <strong>of</strong> Pythias <strong>and</strong> is amember <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Presbyterian Church, a deacon <strong>and</strong> treasurer in <strong>the</strong> FirstChurch <strong>of</strong> Brunswick.At Brunswick on October 15, 1903, Mr. Bourne married Edna EdgbertNash, whose parents, Warren N. <strong>and</strong> Susan Caroline (Wilcox) Nash, wereborn in Montgomery' <strong>and</strong> C<strong>of</strong>fee counties, <strong>Georgia</strong>. Mr. <strong>and</strong> Mrs. Bournebecame <strong>the</strong> parents <strong>of</strong> three children: Miss Lois, born in December, 1904, <strong>and</strong>attending <strong>the</strong> public schools <strong>of</strong> Brunswick; Sybil, born in March, 1907, <strong>and</strong>also attending school; <strong>and</strong> Mildred, born in 1909, who died at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> twoyears.*JAMES M. HULL, M. D. Of all vocations <strong>and</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essions none is moregenerous in its labors <strong>and</strong> its gifts than is medicine. No career requires longeror more severely thorough preparation; none dem<strong>and</strong>s in practice more absolute <strong>and</strong> steady devotion to difficult <strong>and</strong> delicate tasks; none is ever pursuedwith a finer disregard <strong>of</strong> worldly emoluments than is a conscientious physician's characteristic activity. Among <strong>the</strong> esteemed exponents <strong>of</strong> this pr<strong>of</strong>ession in Augusta, <strong>Georgia</strong>, <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> Dr. James M. Hull st<strong>and</strong>s significantlyhigh.A fine old Sou<strong>the</strong>rn family is that represented by Doctor Hull. His gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r, Asbury Hull, was a patrician <strong>of</strong> early ante-bellum days, an extensiveproprietor <strong>of</strong> broad l<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> many black servitors.
